Yakshangana shows are very popular in Karnataka and now Mangaluru is set to host a week-long festival. A Yakshgana is folk theatre that is typically a combination of dance, music, and theatre with elaborate make-up and costumes.
From October 6 -12, Mangaluru will see a series of Yakshagana performances that are a treat for the audiences. Noted artists performing in the theatre festival include ‘bhagawatha’ Puttige Raghurama Holla, Prasada Balipa, Ravichandra Kannadikatte, Subraya Holla, Vishveshwara Bhat, Umesh Shetty, Jagadhabhirama Padubidri, Thimmapa Mijar and Radhakrishna Navada.
The programmes scheduled include Yakshagana ‘prasangas’ such as Sri Ramanjaneya; Hidimba Vivaha-Bakasura Vadhe-Kimmera Vadhe; Brahmakapala; Yakshamani; Chadita Ambe; Shashiprabha Parinaya and Seetha Parityaga and Kusha Lava, Talamaddae ‘Vaali Moksha’ on October 10 at 2.30 pm and ‘Yugala Yakshagana’, a performance by Ravi Alevooraya and Sri Vasta Bhat on October 11.
There is a solo Yakshagana performance by Goutham DK on October 11 at 10 am and on October 11 students of Kadali Kala Kendra will stage the Yakshagana ‘Sudarshana Garvabhanga’.
