Malayalees set to celebrate New Year

Malayalees in the city are gearing up to celebrate the New Year, Vishu, on Friday. The new year falls on the first day of the Malayalam month of Medam.

Vishu is celebrated as a harvest festival where farmers offer their grains, vegetables, and fruits to lord Krishna while praying for a prosperous year.

Speaking about the rituals being followed on this day, Kannan Nair, a resident of Andheri, said, "We decorate the feet of Lord Krishna by fresh agricultural produce such as rice, paddy, cucumber, jack fruit, coconut, and ripe plantains. A big mirror is also kept at the back of the decoration for reflection. Elder members of the family give Kaineettam, an amount of money as a blessing to the youngsters."

According to the citizens, there has been rise in the price of fruits and vegetables in the market. KA Viswanathan, who purchase fruits from Matunga market, said, "Since it a festival season, the prices of fruits and vegetables have increased."

The festival is celebrated at Matunga's Asthika Samaj. K Ramakrishnan, secretary of the temple, said, "Malayalees in the city visit the temple in their traditional clothes. While men wear mundu, females wear off white saree called pamundu. Devotees start visiting temples early in the morning to see 'Vishukani' and to also see the idol of Lord Krishna."

Catholic Secular Forum will be organising a walking pilgrimage to highlight the crucifixion of Jesus Christ on Friday morning, at Santacruz.

The forum will be organising this for the 30th year. Speaking about the enactment, Joseph Dias, secretary of the forum, said, "People have misconception about 'Good Friday'. Through this we want to make citizens aware about this day. We mourn and fast on this day. During the walk, we pray and sing along the way. This year, the intention is to spread message of peace and harmony."

The walk will start from Sacred Heart Church and will be concluded at St. Charles Convent in Vakola.
