If you look back at history, you will notice that headgear has always been a part of adornment for women. Be it Japanese geishas, Greek goddesses, English queens or Indian royalty, every culture has had a version of the head accessory. While head bands were a common sight on celluloid, thick, forehead-covering bandages haven't been seen post Rekha's 1988 hit Khoon Bhari Maang. Fortunately, a less dramatic version of the accessories is getting popular again in the form of floral wreaths, dainty head chains and bow-bands.

The new trend can be pulled off as easily as wearing a pair of peep toes, says former fashion stylist and designer Jia Nariman Chauhan of Veri Vintage. "To pull of this trend, you can take simply drape a funky cloth as a turban on the forehead paired with a floor-length maxi. Or sport the same turban with a pair of skinny jeans and a vest for a day-out," says Chauhan.

To choose the outfit to go with your gear, simple rules need to be kept in mind. Firstly, since a head gear is statement making, opt for clothes that are plain, have sober colours and simple styles. This helps keep the attention on the accessory itself. "If your choice of headgear is a plain, golden chain or a floral wreath, match it with a plain white or black dress. Similarly, notch up a floral top or jacket by teaming it with a plain headband that has a twist or a bow," says fashion blogger and personal shopper Dhruvi Shah of alicewandering.com

The only exception when dressing a glamorous outfit with an equally dramatic headgear is justified is during bridal dressing. "Lots of jewellery designers have come up with fancy versions of the traditional maangtika. These can be used to dress wedding gowns or lehengas alike. Just keep the culture and occasion in mind," quips Shah.
Chauhan adds that age has little to do with this accessory. "Headgear can be carried off by people of all age groups. While the younger lot can be bold and adventurous with styles, sizes and colours, the older lot can make a statement with classic hats or brooches."
