The transition from school to college can be daunting. For most freshers, it’s an exciting time to experiment with their style, including their make-up. With thousands of products available in the stores, it can be all the more confusing. It’s difficult to figure out what you need and where to get started. Now, help is at hand. Make-up experts tell After Hrs how to navigate the world of beauty as a beginner.

Have fun with it

Don’t go overboard with layers of make-up. Instead, use it to enhance and not overpower your features. The idea is to look fresh, youthful and glowing, opines Priya Kapur, make-up and hair expert. “To begin with, make sure your skin is clean and hydrated. This is the stage to add a primer to your face and eyelids to create an even base for the make-up. Dab small dots of a light foundation or BB cream all over your face and neck. Use a brush to blend it evenly to form a thin layer. Next, apply concealer to camouflage any blemishes. Make sure to blend with a blender brush in circular movements and set it with translucent powder. Once the face make-up is even, use a simple eyeshadow brush to add a light pastel pigment to your lids and define your eyes with some kohl,” she says. Peach, cobalt blue and green are some of the colours trending this year. You can also experiment with a coloured liner.

Add a swipe or two of mascara to your lashes, and finish off with some tinted lip balm or gloss.

Kit essentials

Tones of purple and burgundy are in for eyeshadows this season. Yellow eyeshadow is also trending. Big bold liners and small crystals are ideal for this season. Niti Luthra, celebrity make-up artist, recommends some vanity kit essentials. “Always keep a moisturiser in your kit to keep the skin well hydrated. A concealer for those blemishes and dark circles, a loose powder, blush, a kohl pencil, mascara and lip gloss,” she says. For a more natural look, one can use a brown eyeshadow to make the crease and a light highlighter for the brow bone. It looks natural and creates depth. Use of soft colours like nude or peach tones also look beautiful. For the evening, one can add a smokey touch by using black colour in the corner of the eyes. As for the pout, you can use nude pencils and fill the whole lip with the help of the pencil. Later, gloss it up,” she adds.

Make the eyes pop

For college, don’t go all out with a full make-up face. Instead, there are simple tricks that instantly make a difference. Use of a blush, eyeliners, kajal and lip tints are an absolute must. Highlighters add a glam touch, explains Anisha Chawla, Make-up and hair stylist. She recommends using a blue turquoise pencil on the lid close to the lash line and smudging it with a brush. Add a green kajal. The combination makes the eyes pop and makes it look really fun. Coats of mascara add to the oomph factor. “Usually creating hard lines is always a struggle for beginners. I suggest to apply an eyeliner and smudge it with a brush that creates a soft look,” she adds.
