Summer, swimsuits and SPF: The three S’s spell unmitigated chutzpah. As you take a dip in the pool, make sure that you look up-to-the-second chic. With the right pool ensemble, you will be the ultimate femme fatale à la Jessica Paré in Mad Men on a Hawaii beach. On the show, the stylish actress completes her retro print two-piece swimsuit with a pair of ’50s inspired sunglasses, an over-sized hat and of course, her ultimate accessory the dashing Jon Hamm. Blame it on the high-fashion show but ’50s style swimwear is out-tuxing every other trend from the runway to the racks.

Colour blocked to glory!
“Colour blocking is a smart design move for swimwear wherein one can shift focus from the weaker points to the stronger assets with a smart play of colours. Due to the intimate nature of swimwear, it works well to accentuate the confidence for the wearer,” says designer Shivan of the label Shivan & Narresh. The high-waist bikini is back in full form in solid as well as colour-blocked versions.

Also, customising a swimsuit to fit perfectly on the body and suit unique body types is the constant demand of the new age swimsuit buyer. “Today’s evolved swimwear buyer on the other hand is more comfortable with her body and prefers wearing our Handcraft line which is handmade with thin lycra making the swimsuit a second skin and resistant to UV rays, oil and body lotion,” says Narresh.

Mix neutrals and sharp hues
“We as designer haven’t exploited the opportunities of being geographically blessed with vast coastal belts. This summer, resort fashion has taken a cruise route seriously by emphasising on having exclusively swimwear edition. The retro ’50s vintage style lines are en vogue. Think studio starlets revived in a more minimal mode. Sharp summer hues like tangerine and lemon work best with neutrals like ivory, tan and camel. Layer it with smart halter cover-up in gauzy cotton for maximum impact,” says designer Aniket Satam.

Cherry reds, corals with aquamarine green, chocolate browns and stripes are in this summer. “Treat your swimsuit as the base and put together different looks for different time slots through the day. You could choose to wear a pair of shorts with your swimsuit in the morning for the beach. Change the shorts to a pair of palazzos for the afternoon to shop around the city. And transform into a sarong for a beach to bar look for the evening.

Accessorise with scarves, statement collars, wedges and a beach tote,” says Shivan.

Accessorise it with attitude!
Complete your look with a pair of sunglasses and wedges which adds to your height. Finish your look with a scarf if you have a simplistic ensemble, advises designer Urvashi Kaur. “Opt for simplistic and cleaner lines sans embellishments. Neons have emerged as a major trend. Geometrical and linear patterns are ideal for creating illusions. A sailor-inspired look can be great bet too. A straw hat is a must and reflects your attitude. Go for a floor-length kimono or ponchos, a pair of loose pants with chiffon tops or jumpsuits. I work with a lot of sheer elements which have an air of playfulness about them,” says Urvashi.

And the most important accessory of all — a radiant smile on your face as you sip bellinis with your girl pals by the pool.
