It’s been five fruitful years in Tanishq for Abhishek Rastogi and the excitement of the job is still palpable in his voice when he starts the interview by saying, “The job is really exciting and every day is a new day here and as every collection we work on is a new collection, the excitement is always fresh.” As design manager, Abhishek’s job entails leading a team of designers, ensuring that the brand is ahead of competition by creating jewellery that is unique and defining brand image by conveying the right message to the customer. Of course, in between all the brand management, Abhishek also keeps the designer in him alive by oversseing the creative aspect of jewellery designing. “There are various aspects to design but yes, I also ensure that I add my bit to every collection,” Abhishek avers.

Talking about the number of collections his team create every year, Abhishek reveals, “We typically come out with four to five collections in a year,” and the theme of each collection according to him, “depends on the different audience segments we are catering to.” And how long goes it take to complete an entire jewellery collection comprising of necklaces, bangles, rings — the whole shebang, in short? “It really depends on the complexity of the theme,” reasons Abhishek adding, “it also depends on the R & D required. As an estimate, it takes six to seven months to complete a collection.”

And so, as the conversation veers, we get to talking about Ganga, the latest offering from Tanishq, one that we learn has been inspired by The Ganges. Abhishek elaborates, “There’s a widespread appeal that The Ganges evoke and my team and I had a special interest in the theme. When we started working on it, we took inspiration from the mythological aspects of the river, the cities she passes through etc.” And here’s where Abhishek adds rather fondly, “While doing research an interesting thing came up — of the moods of Ganga and how they relate to the different phases of a woman’s life. So, just like a woman evolves from a playful girl to a vivacious adolescent to becoming the creator of life, as a mother untill finally, she attains moksha, the river takes birth in Gangotri then turns furious in the mountains before flowing calmly in the plains untill   in the end she meets the sea.” Who would have thought jewellery designing could have so profound an inspiration. Well, deep analogies apart, Abhishek touches a little more on the collection, adding, “We also thought that coloured stones would play well with the theme and so have used precious uncut stones like mooonstone, blue sapphire, topaz etc. Every stone used has a significance...” he informs before recalling that the biggest moment while working on Ganga was “when we realised that this could be the next best thing. We were pretty excited from the moment we hit upon the idea and during proto-development, where we showcased the prototype of the designs — everyone fell in love with the collection,” he happily recalls.

And finally, there is one question that we have to ask: Has he, in his travels or outings, ever come across people wearing his designs? He laughs and admits that, “it has happened quite a couple of times. For instance, we’d launched the Taj collection a year and half ago and so, some time ago, I happened to see Hema Malini, who was waiting at the airport check in wearing earrings from the collection. I have seen other people wearing our designs, too. It’s a nice feeling to see your creations being worn by people,” he wraps up.
