As kids we have all grown up hearing bedtime stories as our parents tucked us in at night.

No wonder children love listening to stories. Sherin Mathews, a professional storyteller now wants to encourage them to be active participants and not only listen but also learn to tell stories. She’s organised a summer camp where kids will be taught storytelling techniques. It will end with a storytelling festival on April 27.

Sharing the details of the festival, Sherin, who has been working as a professional storyteller for the past seven years, says, “Through my interaction with kids I have observed that they enjoy listening to stories and are easily drawn to the world of fantasy.

However, their experience is only limited to listening rather than being an active participant. I want to change that with this festival and give kids a chance to not only listen, but also learn how to tell stories.”

Sherin hopes to achieve this through her camp which kicks off on April 15 and will end on April 25, costing Rs 3,000. She adds, “When people think of storytelling they generally focus on voice modulation and the body language of the narrator, I want kids to know that there is a lot more to storytelling. I plan to do this through five different acts which will expose the kids to different techniques of telling a story.

This unique festival will combine drama and music with different forms of storytelling, and will be performed by children between the age of 4 and 16 years. Kids can look forward to dramatic narrations of  well-known stories like Pied Piper of Hamelin and original stories presented by Sherin.

When & Where: April 27, 10 am to 2 pm, PrabodhankarThackeray Auditorium, Borivali (W)
