Though kissing on screen no longer induces gasps of horror, a few liplocks off screen have managed to offend people and create a stir. Though some of these moments took place in the private enclosures far away from the lenses of shutterbugs, the presence of onlookers with mobile cameras saw some of these intimate moments becoming public knowledge. Whether it’s a passionate kiss or a peck on the cheek, here’s a look at some that generated quite a controversy...
AKASH DADLANI AND SHILPA SHINDE
Recently, a video made its way online, in which Bigg Boss 11 contestants Shilpa Shinde, Puneesh Sharma and Akash Dadlani were conversing with each other when all of a sudden, Akash forced a kiss on Shilpa’s lips. She tried to push him away expressing her dislike. This video earned the ire of people on Twitter condemning this act of Akash and trending it with hashtags #EvictVishalDadlani and #justiceforshilpa
PRATEIK BABBAR AND AMY JACKSON
The young lovebirds couldn’t keep their relationship under wraps, after a naughty photograph of them locked in a smooch became public. Prateik and Amy had gone partying with their friends in Goa, where they were dancing and kissing. The photo, which was taken by a friend via a mobile phone, was put up on a social networking site by Amy, without selecting adequate privacy settings, making the picture go viral.
RAKHI SAWANT AND MIKA
Who can forget this notorious incident? It remains the most controversial kiss till date. Back in 2006, at his 29th birthday party, singer Mika forcibly kissed Rakhi Sawant on her lips. The latter was aghast at this occurrence. This incident got the singer a lot of flak and sparked protests and condemnation by women’s rights groups. Rakhi even slapped a molestation case against him.
SHAHID KAPOOR AND KAREENA KAPOOR KHAN
This kissing controversy made Bollywood history in 2004. Stills from a video MMS featuring then lovebirds Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor splashed in a newspaper. The video made an appearance online too, which set tongues wagging in Bollywood like no other. The duo alleged the video was doctored. Kareena slapped a legal notice on the tabloid, demanding an apology and apparently claiming Rs 20 crore as damages. On the other hand, some social commentators criticised the incident citing invasion of Shahid and Kareena’s privacy.
CRISTIANO RONALDO AND BIPASHA BASU
A picture of Cristiano Ronaldo kissing Bipasha Basu rocked Bollywood back in 2007. This happened in Lisbon when the football hero and the actress met while she was compering for the unveiling of the new seven wonders of the world. They met at a night club and were snapped. Though the actress said the moment actually had Cristiano leaning to whisper something into her ear as they were at a noisy place, the picture got everyone talking.
RICHARD GERE AND SHILPA SHETTY
In 2007, at an AIDS awareness event held in New Delhi, Hollywood actor Richard Gere embraced Shilpa Shetty Kundra on the stage, swept her backwards and kept kissing her multiple times on the cheeks. Shilpa’s astonishment at what happened is clearly visible and the footage was telecast all over the media. This incident sparked an outrage, with people burning effigies of the Pretty Woman star in various parts of the country. A Jaipur resident even filed a suit in the public interest alleging that Gere and Shetty had violated India’s obscenity laws.
