This season, designer Kanika Goyal collaborated with artist Babbu — The Painter to create a genderless denim capsule range celebrating the feminist and inclusive spirit.
“Inspired by nostalgia and pop art, it’s an amalgamation of eastern and western influences. The bold attitude is translated through saturated colours, maximal construction surface techniques and slang-usage, which is a signature of both the brands,” says Kanika.
Recently, Aditi Rao Hydari teamed her gym separates with a denim jacket. Kriti Sanon is often seen pairing her party dresses with this closet essential. What is it about the classic’s allure, which never dents its timeless appeal? Designer Nishka Lulla attributes its popularity to the comeback of the ’90s. “It’s a very ’90s trends, but in the new oversized format, it’s kissed with textures and brooches. High-street brands like Topshop and ASOS have brought it with faux fur lining inside making it apt for fall months,” says Nishka. Thanks to many creative collaborations between designers and artists, the jacket has gone unapologetically DIY. Designer Rajat Tangri says, “The classic has gone DIY and fashionistas are more than happy to add elements like badges and icons.”
IDEAL AIRPORT LAYERING
A denim jacket is a great piece for transitioning between seasons and therefore the perfect layering piece for airport appearances. Designer Arpita Mehta loves the absolute distressed ones of Unravel Project by Ben Taverniti. “It’s that hero piece that one should own in their wardrobe. It is not only high on comfort, but also fashion,” says Arpita. The most basic of them all, the blue jean jacket’s versatility makes it an easy favourite for anyone looking to layer up or add a casual edge to their outfit for airport appearances.
Designer Rhea Pillai Rastogi shares, “Its availability in countless washes and all sizes makes it a winning add-on to almost any look. A crop denim jacket over a bustier and flared pants would be a great way to style the look. An oversized denim jacket with a tank top and shorts too is a chic look which many of the young people are opting for.”
PLAY WITH DENIM
While celebrities are always on a watch-list when it comes to airport trends, you can use a denim jacket in a fun way to mix and match, play up your look.
Designer Nikhil Thampi suggests, “Throw on a denim jacket over a dress, playsuit or skirt to give it a cool athleisure vibe. Complete the look with sneakers and a pair of oversized sunglasses and you’re good to go.” On the other hand, designer Swapna Anumolu suggests an off-kilter pairing. “Try teaming your denim jacket with a white chikankari kurta to be a little more experimental,” she says.
