As Holy Week draws near, Christians prepare to mark the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. This solemn period of fasting and prayers ends with Easter Sunday that symbolises and celebrates new life. While there is a spiritual context to it all, food also plays an important role in the days leading up to Easter. On Maundy Thursday, Hot Cross Buns sell like hot potatoes at neighbourhood stores selling baked goodies while marzipan and chocolate Easter eggs jostle for space on shelves on Easter Sunday. Another traditional favourite that’s hard to come by is the Simnel cake, a light fruit cake decorated with marzipan that’s generally eaten on Easter Sunday in the British Isles. Simnel cake and Easter bunny
Simnel cakes are light fruit cakes decorated with marzipan with a layer of marzipan running through the centre of the cake. They are consumed for Easter in the British Isles, and are generally topped with 11 spheres of cashew nut marzipan, each to represent one of the apostles (excluding Judas). Malad-based Johanna D’Souza will be accepting orders for a stuffed roast chicken served with a special sauce. The bird will be stuffed with sausages, bacon, carrots, caramelised onions, potatoes and peas, served with a side salad and an option of two sauces (Rs 1,199). She is also taking orders for Easter eggs (Rs 95 onwards for 50 gms), Chocolate Fudge Egg (Rs 110 for 50 gms), Easter Cookies (Rs 35) and a range of cakes starting from Rs 200 onwards.

Sugar crafted baskets layered with eggs
Bandra-based Desiree Attari is known to spin sweet fantasies with sugar. Check out her range of Easter eggs, which include the traditional marzipan eggs and chocolate eggs alongwith her collection of eggs inspired by superheroes like Spider-Man and Batman, Iron-Man and fantastical beings like Tinker Bell and Frozen’s Elsa. You can pick up the sugar crafted baskets with eggs for Rs 300 onwards, while the marzipan eggs are available for Rs 90 onwards, the hollow chocolate eggs start from Rs 110 onwards, while the solid chocolate eggs cost Rs 70 onwards.
