Whoever said women are the vain sex should read this. It turns out that women are not the only ones queuing up for anti-ageing treatments like Botox but men are too. Brotox — as the term has been coined to denote men who regularly go in for injections to conceal their fine lines and wrinkles — is gaining popularity. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, there is a 310 per cent increase in men seeking Botox as compared to 10 years ago. However, about 20 per cent of them still try to keep it a secret. Men in their late 30s, 40s and 50s are turning to Botox to retain their youthful look and also avoid age discrimination at work. Some also do so due to suggestions from their wives or girlfriends.

Botox in men lasts longer
Dr Shefali Trasi Nerurkar, MD Skin, Dr Trasi's Clinic and La Piel says men are getting more conscious about their looks. "The approximate age group is 35 to 50 where men are seeking Botox treatments. While some simply want to increase their self confidence, or look more professional, others want to look younger and better as society demands the same. The results are more or less the same as those found in women. In fact, in men the results last longer due to lesser use of expressions," she says.

Equal number of men want botox
There is a huge growth in male aesthetic procedures like Botox explains Dr Naveen Taneja, director of The National Skin Centre. "In our centre we are have an equal ratio of male and females asking for aesthetic procedures. Botox can even be done in the 20s if one has developed excessive expressions or due too excess sun exposure. Botox can help remove these fine lines. Compared to women, males are more interested in non-surgical procedures where they can come, do the procedure and then leave for their work. In men generally more units of Botox are consumed as compared to the females due to the strong muscles," he says.

Crow's feet and frown lines top concern
Dr Smita Gaonkar, Skin and You clinic says men usually have specific concerns."Those in their late 30s come in to address the crow's feet around the eyes and frown lines that begin to appear. It can be done in the 40s to address worry lines on the forehead, or for those having a heavier face to give it a more V shaped look or a better defined jawline," she says. Dr Geeta Oberoi, Managing director, Skin and You clinic adds apart from Botox men seek other treatments like fillers, laser hair reduction for chest, beard shaping, peels for glowing skin and oxygen hydration facials.
