Gucci’s fall winter menswear 2016 runway brought back luxe pyjama dressing in vogue. When one thinks of a classic PJ look, Hugh Hefner’s nonchalant dressing comes to mind. However, PJs are out of the bedroom and can even be worn on the red carpet with the right accessories. Dolce and Gabbana’s runway was awash with floral printed twin sets and even Alberta Feretti couldn’t resist their charming allure and she too sent out a visually sumptuous pair of PJs. In India labels like Aimaan, Aartivijay Gupta and Atsu have reinterpreted the classic in their own handwriting. We get the experts to suggest ways to rock the look...

No fashion codes anymore!

Maithili Ahluwalia, owner of Bungalow 8, who’s been at the forefront of the comfort dressing movement in India, suggests that this trend is an offshoot of a relaxed evening wear approach in fashion. “I often wear a kimono which looks like a bathrobe at formal events. There aren’t codes anymore and it’s about how you wear it — dress it up or down. Club a silk bathrobe over a long maxi, or pair a maxi with a pair of tennis sneakers. It’s no longer about a head-to-toe runway look,” she says.

Don’t overdress

Stylist to stars, Aastha Sharma feels that the whole idea behind the night-suit look is comfort so don’t overdress it. “Style it with sneakers if you’re heading to a casual setting. For a night in town, opt for block heels and add a pop of lip colour. Roll up your sleeves to make it even more relaxed and laidback,” she advises.

Break the look

Menswear specialist designer Sahil Aneja cautions against pairing the top and bottom together. A pair of jeans or tailored trousers can be a cool alternative and takes away from that out-of-bed, sleepy vibe. A pair of PJs work well for a sundowner or a pool brunch. Having said that, few guys in India can carry it off. Everything on the runway looks achievable, but is not very easy.”

A great alternative to the jacket

Menswear specialist at Ensemble,  Amit Hansraj opines that the night-suit is a relaxed, cool and a welcome respite from blazer or jacket looks. “Balancing out the separates is the key. Either wear it with a pair of tailored bottoms or a structured top. Avoid open-toe footwear. Instead, opt for sneakers or white trainers. Pick deeper hues and don’t take the kitsch print route,” he suggests.

Ditch the flats

Stylist Isha Bhanshali suggests a polished look to take away from the out-of-bed vibe. She says, “Ideally, one should add a pair of sleek pencil heels and steer clear of ballerinas or flats. Add a nice PJ shirt with a pair of ultra-skinny jeans and complete your look with sleek hair. The hair should not be messed up. Men should opt for a pair of statement sneakers and a nifty timepiece. Balance out the look with accessories. When I think of PJ dressing, a silk suit from Alberta Ferretti comes to mind.”

Designer Manish Bansal, who showcased an embellished sweatshirt and a wide-legged pyjama set with his signature ‘B’ logo and zipper suggest, “The key is a mix — to formalise it with tailoring elements as a jacket, white shirt, shoes or even pocket watch. Like a white  loungewear long tee with a light grey Prince of Wales check suit and white sneakers!”
