Instagram and Snapchat filters are often blamed for propagating unrealistic beauty expectations. However, a new viral make-up trend called Instaception gives social media users an opportunity to be themselves without glossing over, what are considered to be flaws or imperfections. And it sure helps that it is a great way to experiment and create eye-catching images. Here’s why the trend has found many takers.

WHAT’S INSTACEPTION?

Simply explained, it’s an Instagram post within a post, which was created by beauty vlogger Dom Ski. After sharing an image on social media, Dom captioned his artwork, “Picture perfect, I had this idea stuck in my head for a while now, didn’t execute it as well as I could have but oh well (sic).” The frames even have painted ‘like’, ‘comment’ and ‘share’ buttons. Instagrammers have fallen in love with this new trend, with hundreds of talented users experimenting with the style both in India and abroad. While the original one saw make-up applied to only one area within the border, people have gone wild trying different things. Here’s why the trend has caught on.

A TREND THAT LETS YOU BE YOU

Beauty and make-up influencers are currently smitten with Instaception because it allows experimentation without having to cosmetically alter your facial features. It encourages accepting your flaws and being real, according to Ruhi Baweja, a freelance make-up artist. Speaking about why she created one such post, she says, “I have been a freelance make-up artist for the last six years. I wanted to reboot my make-up page and came across this trend. I felt Instaception was a perfect way to start. It wasn’t just a really cool concept, it was a great way of making the person relatable. Beauty gurus with their make-up and editing appear to have such “perfect skin” but we all have our flaws. For me, it was a way of showing my skill along with being honest about how I ‘actually look.’”

PRESENTING A PICTURE THAT’S NOT ALWAYS PERFECT

While positive beauty and body image is one aspect, there’s no denying the fact that this trend is a great creative outlet as it has a lot of scope for experimentation. Sushil Brahmbhatt, a beauty and fashion influencer, explains, “I create beauty and fashion related videos and pictures for my Instagram page and YouTube channel. The Instaception look that I have created is inspired by Dom Ski.” She adds, “Most Insta make-up trends are about using filters that make you seem more attractive. Wrinkles disappear, any scarring is glossed over, and skin appears flawless making the picture appear perfect. However, this also shows that one is not comfortable in their own skin. Instaception changes that as you get a chance to present both sides — one with make-up and the real you — minus all the trappings of being perfect.”
