Indians rank 10th globally in spending on hotels, says survey

When it came to spending on hotel rooms domestically, Indians ranked fourth in getting the best value accommodation with an average payment of Rs 5,346 a night.

India ranks among the top 10 countries whose travellers have spent the most on hotels during international trips in the first half of this year, a recent survey released by leading global online hotel booking portal Hotels.com has revealed.

As per the survey, Indians, on an average, spent about Rs 9,351 per night, thereby taking the 10th position on hotel expenses. Travellers from Argentina took the first place at Rs 10,456 a night, followed by travellers from the USA at Rs 10,330 a night and then Switzerland at Rs 10,238 a night.

The Hotel Price Index is a regular report on hotel prices in major destinations across the world. The latest edition also revealed that the Swiss spent the most on hotel rooms at home, averaging Rs12,088 a night. Travellers from Singapore came in second at Rs9,298 and Norway third at Rs 9,004 with respect to holidaying domestically.

When it came to spending on hotel rooms domestically, Indians ranked fourth in getting the best value accommodation with an average payment of Rs 5,346 a night. The Malaysians paid the least for domestic travel with an average of Rs 3,645 per night. Travellers from Thailand came next at Rs 4,502 a night, while those from Russia stood third at Rs 5,063.

The survey report was drafted after an analysis of 32 countries — 29 countries paid more for travel abroad than at home with some showing a significant gap between the two amounts. Only three countries paid more at home than abroad with the Swiss showing the highest difference, spending Rs1,850 more domestically than abroad. Singaporeans followed with a difference of Rs 1,326 and then travellers from Denmark with a difference of Rs 82.
