The next time we watch MasterChef Australia in India, we will also get to watch our very own Chef Saransh Goila share the same frame with judges Matt Preston, Gary Mehigan and George Calombaris. Saransh was invited by the makers of the international show to be a guest judge in an elimination challenge, where the contestants had to create the dish he is most famous for — butter chicken! And while it must have been quite a task for the contestants, for Saransh too, it was an overwhelming experience. “I felt I was in a pressure test. The platform is so huge and it’s an opportunity to showcase your country and yourself as a chef in front of these extremely talented and respected judges,” he says, adding that it was a privilege to work in the same kitchen where stalwarts in the field including Nigella Lawson, Heston Blumenthal and Gordon Ramsay have cooked.

Meeting and shooting with the three judges of MasterChef Australia was an experience he will always cherish. “Matt is so charming when he talks about food — almost like a food poet. He had so many food stories to share. Chef Gary, too is really sweet. He loves Indian food and Indian people. George has been more than a chef for me, he’s become a mentor, who’s guiding me on how to take my chef journey ahead. He looks for passion and that’s where I connect with him. I used to call him chef George, now I call him George, so things have progressed!” he laughs.

For Saransh, appearing on the show has been the culmination of a long-cherished dream. “When I started out 10 years ago, I wanted to be associated with MasterChef India but couldn’t as they felt I was too young. Sometimes, things happens for the best. There is no bigger food reality show than MasterChef Australia, so if there was Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, I kind of got the factory!” he laughs.
