Rahul, who has always been known for his contribution to Indian handlooms, made the country proud by winning the International Woolmark Prize, past recipients of which include the like of Yves Saint Laurent and Karl Lagerfeld.

Mishra was announced the winner of the 2013-14 IWP during the final awards event held at the Triennale Museum in Milan on Friday.

His brand’s philosophy has always focused on integrating the rich heritage of Indian craft with the forever changing dynamics of global fashion.

Rahul’s label will now be stocked in Harvey Nichols, Saks, 10 Corso Como, Joyce, David Jones, Colette and MyTheresa.com from August and will receive `5.4 million in financial support.

The other four finalists included Australia’s Christopher Esber, Europe’s Sibling, Asia’s ffiXXed and the USA’s Altuzarra. Over to the designer.

What was your first reaction when you won the honour?
It feels amazing. It is so surreal. It’s still sinking in. I am very proud that I could show a new side of Indian fashion and represent India’s craft at the highest level. These 30 minutes in my life, which I have lived, have been redefined forever for my own brand as well as my support system in terms of handlooms and handicrafts of my country. I am a very proud Indian now because I could showcase true India in front of so many people and compete with the best talents in the world.

Were you expecting it?
I was always preparing myself more than 100 per cent and was only focussing on giving my best shot. Indeed I was very hopeful with the way the collection had turned out. The story of the journey behind this collection is also very interesting with a unique interpretation. I think that is why at the back of my mind, I was praying and hoping for this moment in my life.

How does it feel to beat Altuzarra and be in the same bracket as Lagerfeld?
I found great friends amongst all the participants over here. We were wishing each other good luck. I think all of us, because of showcasing in this prestigious platform, have come out as winners. As far as my win is concerned, I would dedicate it to numerous craft people and handloom weavers who are working with us. It feels great to be the winner of such a prestigious prize which has previous recipients like Karl Lagerfeld and Yves Saint Laurent. To me, they are like God. I have a long way to go and work hard even to be categorised in the same bracket. Just the thought itself puts immense pressure to perform even better.

What is it about your collection that appealed to them?
The very idea behind the collection revolves around the very famous quote by Mahatma Gandhi — ‘Recall the face of the poorest and weakest man you have seen, and ask yourself, if this step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him.’ The judges got very emotional looking at the strength of our handloom weaving and the interpretation of Merino wool in spring summer. They particularly loved the graphics and the delicate embroideries which they found very original and unexpected with Merino wool fibre.
