Fashion designer Bibhu Mohapatra tells Amy Fernandes about his first fine jewellery collection, crafted in Forevermark diamonds
Tell us something about Forevermark and the jewellery.
The jewellery is traditional, but the craft is original and geometrical. Forevermark diamonds are sourced responsibly and are unique in their quality. The diamonds are a beautiful amalgamation of design elements and thus we have the Artemis collection, which is the voice of maternity, luxury and longevity that will last and be passed down through generations to one day become heirloom jewels in families. They will then inadvertently tell soulful stories of various relationships between a mother and a daughter, a husband and a wife and of relationships beyond a single generation.
What attracts the likes of Michelle Obama, Jennifer Lopez, Sonam Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Oprah Winfrey to your creations?
My designs are essentially for real people. The designs have a mission—to let the person wearing the attire be themselves; it empowers and makes them feel good about themselves. I feel the uniqueness of my outfits is in the element of opposites, which is a philosophy. Taking something that is tailored and mixing it with masculine and feminine elements or having old-world techniques infused with futuristic geometric patterns in all my clothes is what attracts them.

Can you tell us something about their individualistic taste?
Michelle Obama loves colours and tailored clothes, whereas Jennifer Lopez loves to look sexy and wears clothes that enhance her figure. Sonam Kapoor on the other hand is like a chameleon; she moulds herself into the outfit and looks good in everything. She can look sultry, while still being very sophisticated. All of them are stylistically very different, but still find taste in my collections and that’s what they come for.
What is on offer in your collaboration with Forevermark?
Artemis is a collection of unique pieces, elaborate chokers and bracelets. There is a wide range of earrings, rings, pendants and bracelets that can become sets. The collection is commercially targeted and designed to appease.
