Summer in Europe kick-starts this month and that’s when the Indian jet set travels to the sunny climes of Portofino, Saint-Tropez and Santorini. However, what to pack may vary depending on the weather of the city you pick. One still needs to pick a good pair of jeans and shorts if you have gym-toned legs to pull it off.

Designer Anjali Patel Mehta of label Verandah swears by her old faithfuls — a pair of ankle-length distressed Diesel denims for their super comfy fits. “Currently, I’m partial to Frame denims. You also need to have two white shirts, a structured basic piece from Tome NYC, Alexa Chung or Anne Fontaine,” suggests Anjali. She also recommends packing an ultra-soft oversized multi-way, voile shirt from her label Verandah.

Throw in a utilitarian travel jacket from Isabel Marant and a fun layered separate from Maje and you’re good to go. “It could be a travel poncho or a macrame kimono, which you could use to layer over any basic to go from day into night. Include good swimwear if you intend to hit the beach. I’d recommend Marsyia Swim for their super solid seamless bikinis and Mara Hoffman for a good one-piece,” adds Anjali.

Needless to say, you shouldn’t miss essentials like a sunscreen, a hat and face-framing sunglasses. Pernia Qureshi, founder of Pernia’s Pop-up Shop, suggests, “You can’t leave without a bunch of short summer dresses. My go-to designers for dresses are Ritika Bharwani and Deme by Gabriella.”

Be A Layer Slayer

A kimono teamed over a swimsuit, a pair of luxe denims, tailored trousers or a dress work well. “A Pareo (a wrap-around skirt) is multi-functional. Invest in a shawl or wrap from Verandah, Paradise Road or Las Bayadas. Personally, I travel in Gap tees and J Crew T-shirts,” shares Anjali.

One should also invest in resort dresses from Verandah, Pero, EKA and Shades of India separates because they combine style with comfort.

The Art Of Accessorising

Pack a small pouch with pieces from Alexis Bittar, Monies, Deepa Gurnani and Verandah. Two pairs of sunglasses and three bags — one cross body travel bag, which takes you from day into night, JW Anderson’s pierce bags and See By Chloe for a budget buy are good options. Saint Laurent, Stella McCartney and FRAME denim’s new bags in a bunch of colours like orange and green are your ‘it’ essentials, too.

Don’t forget to carry a baseball hat and another in straw. Also, pack at least five pairs of shoes. Opt for sneakers or comfortable canvas shoes to cycle and walk all over Europe. Sleepwear from Gap Body or Cotton voile separates from Verandah are a must-have, too. “Pack smart, pick separates you can mix and match, layer and always leave a little room for shopping! A European trip entails a lot of walking, so be sensible as less is more,” suggests Anjali.

Carry Transitional Pieces

Take pieces which can be easily transitioned throughout your trip. A slip dress is good for a mid-day brunch and for a night out in town. Pernia adds, “Don’t pack light but pack clever. Once you’re done, then edit the suitcase. Pull out the outfits you’re least likely to wear. Pack double-duty pieces like white shirts, blue jeans and versatile knits. Pack all outfits according to a colour palette. This way you could pair anything with everything and minimise your luggage.”
