Popular philosophy may say that it is not walls that make a house, but the people in it. Walls, however, can make or break the look of the house!

“A wall can add depth and grandeur to a space. For a dramatic and artistic feel, a wall with hand-painted motifs in vibrant hues and a touch of gold is just what you need. Wall panels made with gorgeous fabrics, mirror panels, and stone combined with wood, brass and fabric adds an eccentric vibe to your space. But if it's a modern, chic look that you are trying to achieve, wood panels and polycoat laminations are options to look out for,” says Shantanu Garg, Architect, Interior and Product Designer.

For a space to exude opulence, a combination of treatments that are aesthetically pleasing could work. According to Shantanu, “A living room adorned with a painting on one wall, hand-painted and brightly coloured motifs on another, and a fabricated panel with a combination of stone and wood on the third wall, breathes grandeur and exuberance”.

Different walls for different folks

While there are many options for those who want elegant walls, the oldest trick in the book is paint. Today, paints can accomplish mind-boggling textures and effects in an unlimited number of colours and finishes. Art on walls, either in the form of framed paintings or murals, can add beautiful textures.

To add a touch of extravagance, indulge your walls with tiles made of unconventional materials such as leather, fabric, wood and so on. People are now also experimenting with live walls—modular units with framed plants. Textured stone walls, in which stone is remoulded and creatively expressed, are also gaining popularity. Embedded technology in walls, such as acoustic walls, is slowly making its presence felt.

The wallpaper story

Wallpapers stand out and “are not just a combination of colours and textures, but also a mix of designs and effects in an uncountable variety. It finds the right balance between the design and structure, between the explosion of colours and subtle nuances. Wallpapers go beyond just paper and vinyl. Wallpapers of pure silk, linen, velvet, gold foil, mother-of-pearl tiles, glass beads, animal prints, foam and 3D films in intricate finish can add to the moods of your home,” explains Rohit Gupta, Elementto Lifestyles.

The latest trends include handmade wall coverings comprising natural wood, abaca bark and papier mâché, for which workers spend an entire day creating just a metre of wall covering.

One of the biggest advantages of having wallpapers is easy maintenance. Unlike other products, wallpapers can be applied in a matter of few hours, eliminating odour and mess, while saving time.

Walls no limit!

“I prefer wall panelling in bold prints and gold motifs in combination with precious stones, colourful hand-painted walls, art deco-style boiseries and chevron-design fabricated wall panels. Locally done thikri art on walls is also one of my favourites,” says Shantanu, pointing to the sheer variety that  today’s house owners can access. Here’s to great walls for all then!
