How to get a job: What is a cover letter?

A cover letter is basically a letter of introduction which is supposed to be attached to your resume.

But why should we send out a cover letter along with our resume? Well, it is what could make a difference between you getting selected for the job interview and not being selected. It seems like writing the cover letter is a tough task, but actually once you master it, it is going to help you at the end of the day.

A cover letter should accompany your resume well; it by no means is supposed to be a copy of your resume. Treat your cover letter as your first point of contact with your future employer.  

Cover letters are of three types:

1. Application Letter - this is for applying to a job opening that you know about.

2. Prospecting letter- this is for finding out about any positions that might be available.

3. Networking letter - this is for asking people to help you in finding out about job openings.
