Kaia Gerber, the ‘baby supermodel’, practically owned the fashion weeks, strutting the runways for Miu Miu, Saint Laurent, Tom Ford, Anna Sui and Valentino at the recently-concluded fashion weeks in New York, Milan and Paris. While Cindy Crawford’s daughter is a catwalk sensation already, her off-duty style, which is edgy-meets-relaxed, merits some study and analysis. Mixing high street and couture like a true fashion pro, she’s shown that style is something which comes to her naturally. On at least three occasions, she teamed up an Alexander Wang and Supreme with Dickies — touted to be the label of high-school bros and blue-collar uniforms. While running errands, she was seen sporting a cropped top with a pair of black leather pants and matching black PVC booties. She’s also worked the now-trending beret to her advantage, clubbing it with a halter top on one occasion and a slogan jumper mini on another outing. We get stylists to share tips on what we could borrow from her style.

A BOYISH SWAG

Most observers applaud the fact that  Kaia’s personal style is not a cut-copy-paste of other ‘it’ girls like Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner. Stylist Allia Al Rufai sees a boyish swag and a certain edge in her. “Kaia is not overtly styled and comes across as rather effortless. For instance, her hair is never fully done up. She dresses appropriate for her age and  wears a lot of T-shirts. Girls can take a lesson or two from her on how to wear a T-shirt in a cool way and maybe a few accessorising tricks,” says Allia.

STREET MARRIES LUXE

Designer Rajat Tangri underscores her eclectic mix of street and luxury vibe. “I see a sense of balance — how her casual day wear transforms into a litany of very singular evening looks with smart mixing and matching of separates and accessories. I think girls can reference different aspects of her style and try to see what suits their body type to create a fun look,” says Rajat.

ELEGANCE MEETS INNOCENCE

The 16-year-old is making a style statement, which is her own. Designer Pria Kataaria Puri says, “Athleisure sprinkled with a dash of elegance and girlie innocence. It’s American comfort with a mix of French twist. I feel it has a bit of ’60s influence. Her effortless charm, mixing of different textures and a play with separates and layering is something girls can inculcate. Also, she accessorises her look beautifully with luxe shoes and handbags.”

A PERSONAL TOUCH

There’s an individual flair to all her ensembles which perhaps makes her stand out in a sea of millennial models and pin-ups. Stylist Isha Bhansali hails her ability to marry high street with couture pieces. “There’s always a personal touch. Besides, she has great legs and toys with athleisure elements in a refreshing way. What I love about her is that she has her own identity and her personal style seems approachable,” says Isha.

INDIAN MODELS WITH GREAT STREET SWAG

While we are on the subject of models, we take a look at our Indian girls who never fail to amaze us with their individual and inimitable street vibe. Here’s the lowdown...

COMFY ANDROGYNY
RACHEL BAYROS

This gorgeous beauty has an incredible street style, which becomes a talking point every time she steps out. She recently walked at the Amazon India Fashion Week for designer and stylist Eshaa Amiin sporting her statement bejewelled sunnies. “She’s a good blend of comfort and androgyny and always manages to gracefully throw in some element of femininity. I love how she toys with hints of pop hues in her neutral ensembles,” says Eshaa.

GIRL-NEXT-DOOR
KANISHTHA DHANKAR

Every time one spots her chilling in a cute cafe in Bandra, she’s the epitome of fabulousness. Jewellery designer Suhani Parekh of Misho Designs hails her as the quintessential girl-next-door, who nails comfort chic. “She’s got a fantastic body, hence everything looks beautiful on her. She understands her physique and embraces it. She’s one of the few people, who always throws an element of surprise in each of her appearances — sometimes you spot her in a skirt and at times she’s wearing a pair of boyfriend jeans. All in all, she plays around with her looks,” says Suhani.

LAYER SLAYER
SUCHETA SHARMA

A runway favourite, she has great style and mixes high-street labels with high-end finds well. Also, she has a good understanding of prints. Designer Aniket Satam observes that fashion doesn’t own Sucheta but she owns every look. “Most models go through rapid changes in between shows and she makes an effort to experiment with her hair, looks, accessories and smart layering with a variety of jackets,” says Aniket.
