Sleek suits, leather trench coats, collared tops with matching midi skirts, oversized sunnies and structured handbags — Amal Clooney’s clothing arsenal has been upscale professional with a hint of boho playfulness. For her evenings out with husband George, she’s embraced unapologetic shine by rocking a Versace chainmail and turning heads in a sequinned vintage Chanel dress. Marrying structure with fluidity, body-con silhouettes with smart layering and playing with varying textures and lengths — she’s shown us time and again how it’s done. Designer Shruti Sancheti says, “As a working woman, her style is aspirational and one can incorporate her sophisticated style of wearing calf-length skirts, tailored dresses and suits which spell professionalism. The perfect blow dry and subtle make-up along with well-edited accessories make her the ultimate style icon for every working woman.”

She oscillates between being single-mindedly pretty in Dolce & Gabbana and Giambattista Valli to exuding a no-nonsense business-like sass in pin-striped shift dresses and button-down midi skirts.

There’s always a surprise element in every look — it could be her pick of embellished combat boots or denim cutoffs teamed with leather leggings. Designer Varun Bahl says, “She’s that one personality who provides endless outfit inspirations every time she steps out. I believe one should be open to new styles so much so that you surprise with every appearance you make. Things to keep in mind — don’t overdo it, know how to accessorise and keep it simple.”

ART OF LAYERING

Mrs Clooney has often been seen layering her trench coats over sheath dresses and there’s endless inspo there. Designer Suman B of label Lola says, “We can work with sheer layering for the summer, which could move on to medium-weight fabrics turned into statement jackets for the night. A sequinned jacket paired with a scarf around the neck is also a really cool way to dress up your shorts and tee look or a pencil dress that you’ve worn to work all day.”

Designer Rina Singh of label Eka seconds that. “I think the secret lies in clever layering. And sticking to one staple silhouette that works for you for most part. Like for her, I think it’s the shift — be it the bodycon dress teamed with an easy trench or a belted casual shift. She has beautiful collar bones, arms and neckline that she enhances. And keeps her hair laid down almost always. That makes her style effortless and consistent.”
