About a year ago, the 5:2 diet gained popularity as a relatively simple way to lose weight by eating normally five days a week and watching calories for the remaining two days. The premise worked for those who found it hard to give up their favourite foods daily. A similar idea is now being used for skincare. The 5:2 skin diet says one can wear make-up five days a week but twice a week one should go sans the chemicals. This is said to unclog pores, help skin breathe and improve cell regeneration leading to healthier skin in the long run. It also offers a break from the possibly harmful chemicals in make-up, prevents acne and lets the moisture level in the skin rebalance. Newer make-up products claim to be better with more skin friendly ingredients but there are still hidden preservatives and fragrances that can damage skin.

HELPS SKIN BREATHE

Dr Soma Sarkar, cosmetologist and dermatologist, clinical head About Face, says this skin diet is good and actually makes a lot of sense since one’s skin can breathe easily. “Wearing make-up daily can be really harmful in the sense that it can aggravate pimples and also clog pores. Some make-up can also cause one to develop rashes and redness. Almost any product that has water must have some preservatives. The most common are parabens, imidazolidinyl urea, Quaternium-15, DMDM hydantoin, phenoxyethanol, and formaldehyde. All have been linked to skin allergies. One should follow a basic skin care CTM (cleansing, toning and moisturising) routine and patients can also go for hydration therapy and fillers for the face,” explains Dr Sarkar.

CHECK THE QUALITY OF PRODUCTS

Nisha Javeri, beauty and wellness expert, CEO Myrah spa says moderation is key. “I believe you can wear make-up seven days a week, provided the quality of make-up is good and it suits your skin type. It is however essential for one to remove the make-up properly to avoid causing breakouts. For those make-up free days, a light tinted moisturiser with SPF will give an even tone and glow to the skin. Most importantly cleanse thoroughly. A relaxing or purifying face mask is good to use after removing make-up, followed by a serum or moisturiser,” says Nisha.

BETTER TO GO MAKE-UP FREE

Caking your face with cosmetics leads to premature ageing and dullness, says Dr Rachita Dhurat, director RD Clinic and consultant Vichy Laboratoires. “With a two-day gap of make-up on your skin, it helps your skin cells to rejuvenate. Chemicals from cosmetics and external factors like dust, pollution accumulate on your skin which seeps into the pores. This leads to breaking down of collagen and harms your skin. Over a period of time due to the above factors you start developing fine lines and wrinkles forcing you to cover them with make-up. Hence, it’s always better to give your skin a break from chemicals. Having said that, I am not sure as to how effective it actually is in the long run,” she says, adding, “It’s always better to go make-up free. Use a sunscreen with sufficient SPF before stepping out and apply a thermal spray to hydrate your skin and give you a fresh look.”

USE SKIN-FRIENDLY MAKE-UP

V Karpagam, national trainer, Naturals hair and beauty salon says with women now part of the corporate culture, their job profile requires them to wear make-up on a daily basis in order to look well groomed. “However, using multiple products everyday does leave an impact on the skin due to the artificial ingredients and chemicals present in them. Heavy make-up tends to cause skin irritation and allergies. Further, chemicals seep into the skin, preventing it from breathing. Try to use skin friendly make-up, like BB creams. Also try to find time at least once a week to pamper and nourish your skin. One should also indulge in natural skin care treatments. A homemade face pack comprising of aloe-vera gel, honey and lemon rejuvenates and moisturises the skin. A monthly facial treatment is recommended, and in summer, one can opt for vitamin C facials for amazing results.”
