I have always held the Art of Animation in very high esteem, a lot more than live action film making. And once I came across Gitanjali Rao’s extremely impressive folio, I was a confirmed fan.

Her films carry wonderful ideas that are communicated as powerfully and the magnificence lies in the vastly different styles. She was also the animator of the famed and really endearing animated TVCs of Hutch (now Vodafone) produced by O&M.

A graduate of Fine Arts from Sir  J.J.Institute of Applied  Art, Gitanjali is a self taught animator, film maker, illustrator,  teacher and theatre artist. Currently she is working on a short 18-minute 2D animation film, TrueLoveStory, to be completed in early 2014. Each frame of the film, painted by hand, is an animated glimpse into the influence of Bollywood on real life.

In 2011, collaboration between Rajesh Devraj, (writer/author and creator Quick Gun Murugan) and Meren Imchen, (an award winning illustrator and animator) brought about an incredible graphic novel called Sudershan (Chimpanzee).

Published by Hachette India, the graphic novel is set in the India Cinema Industry (now Bollywood) of the 1960s, when Sudershan the Chimpanzee, lands on the shores of Bombay and struggles to make it in the city of dreams. Once the book was in my hands, I didn’t stop giggling at the delightful insights and humor. The illustrations are full of energy and they move in you mind like a movie.

I was so proud that we in India could create a masterpiece like it.  I wanted the monkey to win. Those who have read it are already vying to read what they create next. For those who haven’t, you have to read it. It’s a blessing we have Flipkart.

Shruti Shetty  is a soft spoken, polite and modest girl but underneath that politeness lies feisty, exceptional talent. Of architecture (interiors and urban spaces) as well as knowledge on care of kittens and cats, sometimes far better than a vet.

Over conversation about adoption of two kittens I discovered that she had designed the extremely popular restaurant Suzette in Bandra W. And I love Suzette because what has impressed me, is for its miniature sq. feet area, it is a well-designed and efficient space, for the guests and the kitchen.

Especially in Mumbai when availability of any extra space is a like free gold and classy solutions for small spaces is a growing need. With clear skills to manipulate any sized space into sophisticated form, colour and movement,  Shruti is an architect to be reckoned with.

Ravi Vazirani, Bandra

What I really admire about Ravi’s interior and space decor work is that he is bold and will take risks. Not many can say that. Not even the big names in the business.

If you meet Ravi, he seems inspired by very small inane things. To me that is delightful. Because a curator’s little known trade secret is it that artists’ attention to small things is the very key to their greatness.

Ravi is the “walking around, amused and inspired by everything” kind of guy and that includes you, (his clients) your personal disposition, likes and dislikes, which are ingredients of his expounded sense of style.

Meera Dabir, Versova

Like many others’ works, I saw Meera Dabir’s work at a friends house a few years ago.  Painted borders on walls, inspired by Indian Motifs, others were with contemporary and unpredictable patterns.

It was quite radical. Radical because it was lovely to see home owners in Mumbai taking risks with walls that were earlier reserved for coats of plain colour, embellished with paintings and photographs.

What sets the work apart from Paint Giants recommending the same, is a clear, yet personal understanding of what her clients like. Meera’s repertoire of diversity and imagination in her work is not limited to homes and offices though.
