Six months ago, two storytellers (Deeptha Vivekanand and Sowmya Srinivasan) were having a chat, and if their chat hadn’t led to something, they wouldn’t be very good storytellers, would they? So, what followed that chat and the consequent meetings, discussions, additions of new members was the formation of the Bangalore Storytelling Society (BSS). Now, six months later, BSS is all set to host its first storytelling marathon — Tell-A-Thon 2013. “When I first spoke to Sowmya, the initial idea was to create a platform for all professional storytellers in Bangalore.

So we began to meet up regularly, and then after a point, we decided to throw the meet-ups open to the public as well. Storytelling is ideally designed for children but we wanted even adults to enjoy it. Our first meet-up was quite well attended, we even had a bunch of random people turning up for it. Then we decided to meet every month where professionals, amateurs and even first-timers were welcome. The idea was to understand storytelling as an art. Over the course of these meetings, the idea of the marathon came to us,” explains Deeptha Vivekanand, president of the Bangalore Storytelling Society.

The upcoming marathon will have about 15 storytellers across genres and if time permits, someone from the audience might be asked to come and tell a tale as well. These stories could be from anywhere, including personal stories and every narrator would get about 15 minutes to tell their story. “As long as you’re over 18 years of age, you’re welcome to be part of the marathon,” adds Deeptha.

But there’s more to the storytelling sessions than the marathon. “We are also in the process of forming BSS as a registered body, so that we can promote storytelling in a more organised fashion. We intend to have festivals and workshops and even engage in cultural exchange programmes. We would also like to collaborate with international storytellers to popularise the art form wherever we can,” she says.

Be at Urban Solace, Ulsoor, 3.30pm onwards, on November 24. Entry is free .
