Diabeto

Imagine this: you are a diabetic or have a family member suffering from diabetes. One day, you lose all your medical files and finally discover that you have to undergo your diabetes tests all over again. Shreekant Pawar experienced exactly this, which is when he decided to create a Bluetooth-enabled device that could be connected to any glucometer and synced with a smartphone to record the patient’s diabetic condition. And that is how Diabeto was born. Diabeto has two features—one is the application, which will be launched officially on Play Store and Apple Store, this October. The second feature is the hardware—a bird-shaped instrument that can be connected to any glucometer. “The idea is to sync your glucometer data with the downloaded app. This forms a cloud and records your diabetic condition throughout the day. This way, your data will never get lost,” explains Pawar. While the app is free, the instrument is currently priced at $50. Pawar, however, clarifies that the same price won’t apply in India. “We’re looking at selling the instrument at a more economic rate, so that it is easily accessible to all. The eventual plan is to make it an over-the-counter product,” he says. Additionally, you can get in touch with diabetologists, with whom you can consult for a fee ranging from Rs. 600 to Rs. 1800, depending on the specialist. All you need to do is log into the app and book an appointment with the specialist. Interestingly, these experts are also logged into the app so you can have an immediate consultation if the doctor is online at the same time as you. When questioned about hypochondriacs and constant blood-sugar monitoring, Pawar says that pre-diabetic condition is a common phenomenon. “It’s always good to keep your sugar levels in check, given that diabetes is the biggest silent killer around,” he concludes.
