Think of an undercut and instantly images of a punk rock look comes to mind. But the style need not be so out- there. There are many subtle ways to incorporate an undercut in one’s regular do. Take cue from Selena Gomez. The songstress recently posted a pic rocking a long braid while also flaunting a closely shaved portion at the nape of her neck. One of her most dramatic looks to date, it has already won her fans with many touting it the ‘it’ hairstyle of the season. She’s not the first female to experiment with the do. Zoe Kravitz has worn the style in the past with a cute heart design. Last year, Mel B sported a grey mohawk with undercut sides for her America’s Got Talent season premiere. It’s also a favourite of male celebs, such as Cristiano Ronaldo who prefers disconnected undercuts.

Consult your stylist

The undercut is stylish and versatile, it leaves length while the back or sides are closely cropped, faded, or buzzed. Anisha Fernandes Tavares, Senior stylist and make-up artist  from Nalini of Nalini & Yasmin Salon says it’s important to consult with your stylist on what will suit your face shape. “Men can choose looks like the quiff and pompadour. However, regular maintenance is required to retain the shape. Women could choose an undercut underneath their length of the hair to remove weight or to add an edge to the cut. It can also be used to make a statement!”

For the young and bold

Undercut does not necessarily have to be edgy. Melroy Dickson, General manager education, Matrix India mentions, it is often used by hairdressers around the world as a technique to reduce bulk and density, in the case of clients with very thick hair. “If you wish to try it, go in for an undercut at the nape and maximum till the occipital bone so that, if you wish, you can always cover it by wearing your hair open. It is not for the faint at heart, but for the young and the bold,” he adds.

Undercut works well on straight and tamed hair, says Arpit Jain, Managing Director and founder, Auraine Botanicals. People with curly hair may want to avoid it as it may not look well defined on their hair type as compared to straight locks.

Men can experiment too

The undercut hairstyle is one of the most popular short hair trends since the last few years. Typically, the hair on the top of the head is long and parted on either the side or centre, while the back and sides are buzzed very short. In fact, the undercut has also been earlier related to poverty as one couldn’t afford a barber to blend in the sides, as on a regular haircut, explains Jay Kishan Pawar, Assistant manager, Truefitt and Hill. “The short sides, long top creates a cool and classy look. One can also try a curly fringe, slicked back look, or side swept undercut depending on whether you’re looking for a clean modern style or a fresh look before a night out,” he says.
