At the recently-concluded Paris Fashion Week, Balmain magically transported us to a futuristic disco club, seducing us with an iridescent rainbow sheen of designer Olivier Rousteing’s holographic dresses, coats and pants. While evening dressing was once confined to gold and silver sequins, this season it has morphed into foil textiles. One can credit designer Raf Simons at Calvin Klein and John Galliano at Maison Margiela for reigniting this flirtation with oil-like surfaces. Last season, even Karl Lagerfeld sent out transparent raincoats at Chanel thus putting the spotlight on polyurethane. Designer Monisha Jaising sees it as offshoot of the decadent ’80s but done in a modern way. “I loved Balmain’s collection and it didn’t feel dated at all. While India is used to gold and silver sequins, the rainbow tinsel (like a cellophane wrapping) is a different take. I see Indians warming up to this unique shimmer rather well.”

While disco shine was major last season, this fall winter, it assumes prismatic proportions. Designer Rimzim Dadu who plays with a lot of metallics in her outings says, “It could be cool trend in the Indian festive space. It’d be nice to see saris and lehengas teamed with shimmery bomber jackets since a chunk of our audience is moving away from the traditional aesthetic.”

For the daring dresser

From PVC pants seen at Balmain to laminated tweed at Simone Rocha — textures assumed new forms. Designer Arpita Mehta sees it as a trend to watch out for. “It’s definitely for the more fashionable crowd, who need to make appearances for multiple occasions and I see it working in the editorial space,” says Arpita.

Merely a fad

Designer Pria Kataaria Puri sees it as a fad and according to her, it won’t last. “It’s difficult to incorporate it in most lifestyles. I don’t see a lot of people in India following it since the humidity so high and some of these textiles can be uncomfortable,” says Pria.
