When it comes to beauty treatments, most look for a reasonably priced salon or a reputed technician. However, no matter how hygienic the place may be, there are certain infections or problems that can arise over time. Read on to know about potential health effects.

Bikini waxes
While hair removal seems easy enough, waxing the bikini area may lead to inflammation and irritation of the skin. The hair is meant to protect the region and waxing can affect the skin's outermost layer, thereby leading to skin infections. Using an applicator to apply the wax can further spread the infection. Folliculitis (infection of the hair follicles) and ingrown hairs are other common issues. Dr Ashwini Padmawar, dermatologist and cosmetologist, Dermacare Skin Clinic explains, "Wax is not sterile and can cause skin infection. Laser hair removal is a good option to get rid of this hair and very popular too. One can also shave to keep the area clean."

Gel manicures
A recent study caused concern over the safety of UV lamps used to set gel nail polish. Some evidence suggests that the UV light could increase your chances of getting skin cancer. Although the UV radiation varies with each dryer and the risk may be low, experts say it is better to protect skin with sunscreen or fingerless gloves as a precaution.

Using sunscreens
While not really a beauty treatment, most of us use sunscreen on a daily basis. Chemical sunscreens contain chemicals, such as oxybenzone that are said to have cancerous properties. Dr Ashwini says, "Oxybenzone is a FDA approved sunscreen ingredient. It can however interfere with hormones. The theory is that UV absorbing ingredients found in sunscreen could release free radicals, potentially causing damage to nearby cells, which leads to cancer. But there is not enough evidence to confirm this." Megumi Mitsui, Beauty expert, Za, Shiseido says one must choose a sunscreen carefully. "SPF denotes the amount of time a product can keep your skin protected from the sun. A product with SPF 80 means skin is protected for 26 hours. Also, products with a higher SPF tend to contain more ultraviolet absorbers and ultraviolet scattering agents which give the product a grainy, sticky texture. Therefore, for daily use, select a sunscreen with SPF 20 to 30.

Hair Dye
Most people dye their hair regularly with no side effects. But one of the most common allergens, p-Phenylenediamine is used in almost all hair dyes, which can lead to scalp breakout or even trouble breathing. Deepti Samtani, senior hair stylist and trainer, Nalini of Nalini and Yasmin salon says hair dye should be done only once every month and only on the regrowth. "Excessive use of colour is harmful to the hair as well as scalp. Also after care is very important, including using the right kind of shampoo and conditioner and getting hair spas.

Hair extensions
Hair extensions seem like a quick way to add some volume and length to ones locks. However, there are some health risks involved. If not applied correctly, they can lead to scalp problems, making it difficult for one to comb the tresses. Common issues include headaches,
hair loss and allergies. Deepti says, "One should get smaller size extensions customised to fit the head size. Always get extensions done in a professional salon from an expert. A safe option is the clip on ones as they can be easily attached and removed."
