Rub a turnip on your face

Turnips contain some skin-loving vitamins (like A, C, E and B), but we can’t vouch for the vegetable as a spot-fighter. Other fruits and veggies that can give skin a healthy glow are papaya and pineapple, which contain papain and bromelain enzymes which dissolve dead skin cells and help with cellular turnover. Raw potatoes could also help draw out skin impurities, when used over time.

Wear sunscreen every day

Grandma was certainly right about the SPF. Wearing sunscreen daily can help protect skin against cancer and visible signs of aging. Stick with a lotion labeled ‘broad spectrum’ and that has an SPF of 30 at the minimum.

Remove your make-up every night

Ten points to Gran! Removing make-up every evening before bed is a healthy practice, as makeup contains chemicals and collects dirt and impurities throughout the day — all of which can be detrimental to your skin. If you forget a few times a month this shouldn’t have a major impact on the health of your skin.

Don’t overpluck your eyebrows

Grandma knows what’s up when it comes to your brows. Overplucking, just like overwaxing, eventually causes microscopic scarring at the roots of follicles, and over time, repeatedly plucked hairs may cause damage in the follicle that it will seal off and a scar will form, preventing a new hair from being able to grow.

Drink lots of water

Staying hydrated is always a good idea and will help you maintain a healthy fluid balance in the body which is important for every aspect of health, including hair and skin.

Wash your face twice a day

A standard that many follow, it isn’t necessarily the right move for everyone. If you don’t go heavy on make-up or aren’t prone to oily skin, once-a-day wash is fine too. Facial cleansing should be gentle, and should not include
overly aggressive scrubbing or exfoliation on a regular basis.

This can be counterproductive, causing overdrying and irritation, which can lead to the skin overproducing oil to compensate and in an attempt to rehydrate and
protect itself.

Moisturise twice a day

Again, there is no universal practice — Grandma may have been regimented in her moisturising, but your skin might need less.
