Sangita Kathiwada is known for her sense of elegant style with a dash of regalia.

Being a qualified graphic designer, she has also studied jewellery designing, interior decoration, photography, and silkscreen printing.

A combination of inherent talent and design education led to the creation of her fashion house, which opened its door to Mumbai in 1993 in a 100-year-old wine cellar.

When asked what made her start a fashion store, she says, “Design is close to my heart...whether it’s textile, product, furniture , fashion or space.”

Sangita has been a mentor to many of today’s biggest designers, like  Priyadarshini Rao, Savio Jon, Ranji Kelekar, Sabyasachi Mukherjee, Narendra Kumar, Wendell Rodricks and Aki Narula to name a few.

So what is that one thing that helped her tap the right talent? She responds, “The first qualities that I look for in a creative person is eccentricity and a sense of adventure, that makes them take the risk, allowing for newness in design.”

Coming from a royal background, her love for art is obvious. So talking about the artists whose works she likes, she says, “Rameshwar Broota, Prabhakar Barve, Swaminathan, Baiju Parthan, Shibu Natesan are some of my favourites.”

Sangita’s sense of style and aesthetics is visible in her clothing. Defining her style statement, she says, “Good manners above good clothes, that is my style.”

Talking about her personal life, she says her 25-year-old son Digvijay Kathiwada “is a sports champion, with great leadership qualities. He has studied Urban Development and Policy Planning in California.”

Finally, when asked about her future plans, she says, “I never have future plans but new ideas emerge every day. We apply whatever is close to our heart and pleases the team.

At the moment, my team’s creative energies are diverted towards renovating our mansion in Kathiwada. Every item of use in interior spaces is being designed specifically.

Creating patterns for floors to blowing glass for lights and weaving fabric, especially for cladding walls, is under progress.

Farming organically and creating contemporary baskets from local crafts is keeping us busy and happy,” she ends.
