Technology is not the only thing that connects us to Japan, the city seems to have awakened to the country’s offerings in food, fashion and creativity as well.
One of the first to tapping into this cultural reserve is the upcoming Fashion

Week. It has roped in eight Japanese designers from the Japan Fashion Week  (JFW)  to show in Mumbai, in a cross-cultural exchange initiative. Ask Akiko Shindoa of JFW about the surge of interest in Japanese fashion and he attributes it to “high and unique creations.”

He adds, “Japan has not only fashion, but also Manga, food and pop music among other things to offer. It is because of these largely popular aspects that people are now interested in Japanese fashion too. Also, Japanese designs focus on the details for comfortable wearing which is why it is most sought after,” he reasons.

Anuj Jodhani, part of an organization whose main aim is to bring Japan to India through food, art and culture says that of all the facets, the city has witnessed Japanese food undergo a 100% rise each year, in the past three years!

“Mumbai has shown the maximum interest in Japanese food till date. Fashion is seeing a slow but steady growth in comparison,” says Anuj. Shedding some light on the spurt in all things Japanese in Mumbai, Anuj says it probably has to do with the innumerable similarities between the two cultures.

“The core set of values are alike. For instance, even the Japanese remove their shoes before entering a house or take a moment before having a meal. People   aping the West have suddenly realized that Japanese culture is very deep — there is a lot of meaning behind everything they do. They have an eye for detail and it’s made us curious,” says Anuj.

Japanese Chef de Cuisine, Chef Raul Borja reiterates that Japanese cuisine has become “fashionable and is gaining popularity of late. Mumbai-ites have become increasingly health conscious and are influenced by the low calorie Japanese diet — Sushi, Sashimi, Tempura and Teriyaki are among the favourites. Japanese food is a vivid trend the world over and has now caught up in India as well,” he concludes.
