For one of the most watched shows, models Irina Shayk, Alessandra Ambrosio, Sara Sampaio and Elsa Hosk gave a sneak peek into their beauty routine. Just before walking the ramp for the Victoria’s Secret Fashion show, the angels had a little pampering session in the form of gold leaf sheet masks by skincare expert Mimi Luzon. The $300 sheets contain a blend of cell-renewing ingredients to improve skin’s elasticity, texture and tone. The gold is said to treat redness and fine lines and give the skin a healthy glow. Experts tell us if these really work.
HELPS IN ANTI-AGEING
Gold masks have been used since many years for the glow it leaves on the skin, says Dr Shefali Trasi Nerurkar, MD Skin, Consultant Dermatologist, Dr Trasi’s Clinic & La Piel. “Gold has the ability to lighten the skin complexion by decreasing the melanin production. It also decreases the dryness caused to skin by increasing the cell metabolic rate and helps in anti-ageing by increasing the cell metabolic rate and slowing down the process by collagen depletion. Metals like gold and copper have been used in food as well to increase the immunity of body and skin. Eating in copperware or silverware was believed to be good for health. Nowadays, cosmeceutical companies have started using it in creams, masks, scrubs etc to have similar results on skin,” adds Dr Shefali.
EASILY ABSORBED INTO SKIN
Gold is actually used in Ayurveda to treat various ailments. Today, scientific research has revealed that gold, being one of the softest metals, is easily absorbed into the deeper layers of the skin. In fact, gold can help in terms of revitalisation, rejuvenation and age control, says Shahnaz Husain, beauty expert, whose product line includes a gold facial kit. “Our gold mask, for instance, contains 24 karat gold in leaf form, combined with herbal extracts, like wheatgerm oil and sandalwood. The mask stimulates lymphatic drainage, removing toxins and wastes, and purifying the skin. Gold also has anti-bacterial properties and revitalises the skin and speeds up the cell renewal process, very necessary for youthful skin.”
NEED EXPERT GUIDANCE
Dr Geeta Mehra, Dermatologist and Founder, Skin and You clinic says using such a mask is expensive. “Gold mask application should be done under expert guidance. Make sure that you go through the instructions before applying it on your face. First cleanse your face properly. Afterwards paper-thin squares of 24- karat gold are applied to the face along with hydrating compounds. This will leave skin tighter and more supple. After 20 minutes, one needs to apply a serum and massage it in.”
