If you’re looking to make a splash with colour this season, look no further. The Shine Line trend, a variation of the rainbow colour do, features horizontal stripes of bright colours, that give the luminous effect of a laser beam hitting the locks. Naturally the effect is Instagram worthy and has caught on in a big way on social media. From deep purples to fuchsia and turquoise, stylists are having a field day pairing shades together.

Works on straight locks

Najeeb Ur Rehman, Professional Partnership Service Director, Schwarzkopf Professional India says of late Shine Line hair and other vibrant colouring techniques are making waves. “In terms of hair texture, this technique requires straight hair with good elasticity as these vibrant direct colours can only be applied on pre-lightened hair. Rainbow colours are generally preferred in smaller sections but we can’t deny the fact that this season the rainbow colours are in demand and clients don’t mind experimenting more. That’s why a lot of professional hair colouring companies have introduced semi-permanent, direct colour pigments so that we can create these bold colour statements,” he says.

Look can be customised

The Shine Line colour technique has been around for a while now and is trending internationally, explains Kinjal Ganatra, director of the Blowdry Bar. “Rainbow/Unicorn hair colours are very much in demand from splash lights to hidden rainbow or underlight as it’s called and it has everyone picking crazy colours off the palette. Purples, blues, neon pinks are extremely popular in India. The colour shades and placement can be customised to your client, varying in brightness and visibility. You can also ask your hairdresser to play with natural hued colours such as browns, blondes and reds and yet achieve a shine line thus keeping it an interesting shift from your usual monotone shade and still very wearable. Since Indian hair has a lot of dark pigments, to achieve rainbow colours/shine lines, the hair needs to be bleached to a very light blonde to achieve vibrancy,” she adds.

Causes some damage

The awareness  of rainbow hair itself is gradually increasing, feels Anisha Fernandes Tavares, Senior stylist and make-up artist, Nalini of Nalini & Yasmin Salon. However, she cautions, “The bleach can  damage the hair to some degree as the hair has to be lifted to a very light level to change the hair colour. The amount of damage really depends on your hair health, the expertise of the person doing the process and the type of hair colour process done. Washing can fade the colour faster, so it should last for about six to eight weeks depending  on the hair type,” says Anisha.
