Sultry, shimmery and shiny eye lids are the must-try look of the season. While glossy luminous skin is typically associated with summer, taking the look one step further are the sticky-looking lids. Whether working with metallic tones or going all out with colour, this is a sure fire way to grab attention to your peepers. The style was created by Pat McGrath for Valentino’s Spring Summer 2018 show and has become a favourite of beauty bloggers and influencers like Kylie Jenner and Kim Kardashian West. To ape the look one needs to apply an eyeshadow, and then finish off with a clear balm or gloss for that shiny finish. But how practical is it for our climate and will Indian women take to it?

Careful in summer

Glossy lids can be tricky in the Indian summer as they can leak all over the place, explains Clint Fernandes, make-up expert. “Instead of using a gloss, one can achieve the same look using just a primer, an eye cream or petroleum jelly with a hint of pigment. One has to be very careful in our weather as the body heat can melt the make-up,” he says, adding, “This look doesn’t work for deep set eyes. Eyelids need to be a bit on the flat side as the gloss can easily collect in the creases of the eyes.” One can play around with various hues depending on one’s outfit. Don’t restrain yourself to metallics — experiment with a pop of colour in bold blues, orange or pink.

If trying out this look, it’s best to keep the rest of the make-up subtle. Add some shine to the cheeks with a highlighter and match a bright coral or magenta lip with a paler eye hue. Lip colour should be matte. This tends to be a bit of a high maintenance look.

Easy to do

If you’re looking for a runway-ready beauty trend to steal, look no further. Glossy eyelids are totally on trend and surprisingly wearable, says Renuka Pillai, celebrity make up expert, Avon India. “The glossy eyelid has been around for years, but recently it’s become an everyday look. This is for people who aren’t very good at flawlessly blending eyeshadow but still want to add some colour and shine to their eyes. It’s really easy to do; in fact, you can’t mess it up because it’s meant to look imperfect. One of the easiest ways to get the glossy lid look is to layer face oil over your neutral eye shadow. Just a dab gives off a subtle glossy shine. I would advise against using olive oil or coconut oil though as it might be too oily. For a finishing touch, add a bit of mascara and some highlighter around your eyes.”

Stick to tested hues

In the summer, glossy lids can end up looking like sweat. Vipul Bhagat, make-up expert advises, “Don’t use a cream eyeshadow as it collects on the eyes as you blink. Instead opt for a frosty formula. For Indian skin tones, I’d suggest ticking to a bronze, silver, nude or peachy pink colour.”
