"Imagine a world where maybe your phone gets charged while it is still in your pocket by solar energy or imagine your collar functioning as the receiver and mike to communicate. Imagine a world with no use of air conditioners and your fabrics solves the purpose, Imagine your garment hydrates you with the moisture around you by reverse osmosis, and so much more left to your imagination," says designer Pranav Mishra of Huemn.

Designers like Hussein Chalayan have time and again toyed with the idea of futuristic dressing with the use of tech fabrics and LED lights. Raf Simons at his recent Dior couture show showcased some of the futuristic-inspired looks. We ask our designers about their take on futuristic dressing.

Industrial outlook
Designer Anand Bhushan says, "In this overhyped world of 'Organic and Sustainable' clothing there is a bunch of designers who have taken the industrial outlook towards living and fashion. The use of man made yarns and metals like steel, copper, aluminum, plastic are being use to present a conceptual lifestyle. I belong to that school of thought where 'natural' fabrics and techniques don't excite me."

Blend of fashion and technology
"Technology is the best weapon for fashion to conquer and be more meaningful.
Fashion is short lived, as Alber Elbaz of Lanvin once said " Fashion is like a fruit, you could not have it a day before, and you could not have it a day after." With technology we could change this, It would have a purpose to survive longer.
The blend of fashion and technology is way beyond just LED lights and metal molds even today. Some of the details designers work with today would not have been possible possible without technology, some of the fabrics would not have been possible, Fashion has evolved with technology, and technology with Design," says Pranav.

Costume-ish in India
Designer Anita Dongre says, "Futuristic fashion does most certainly push the creative boundaries, marrying creative aesthetic with technology and innovation- a unique and radical design collaboration where one uses elements right from LED lights to helium balloons to metallic moulded pieces or even wood- which represent the avant garde and offer a peak into what the future of fashion holds. However, speaking in the Indian context and from a wearability point of view, anything too constructed or stylised or overtly innovative is almost immediately related to drama or theatre in India and hence perceived as too costumish.

She feels that showcasing such cutting edge designs on the runways creates drama and is inspiring for the audience, it may be too bold a statement for most people's wardrobes. "Western sensibilities are very different and more evolved when it comes making radical fashion choices, where one would see pop and music icons like a Lady Gaga, Rihanna or a Madonna donning these futuristic creations, while the Indian audience would still rather look conventionally fashionable than radical. I think we still have a long way to go before we become fashionably liberal and experimental. Its still the era to "fit in" rather than "Stand out" so the future of dressing in my opinion which while will continue to be experimental, edgy and driven by innovation in thought and design, it may still take a while to get from the runway to the consumer's wardrobe."

Digital invasion
Designer Aniket Satam says, "Molecular technology and convertible construction is indeed the future of fashion. Also, textile Innovation and sustainable approaches would be defining our eco sensitive needs in the future. Personally, I think we are gradually moving - back to the basics with more organic and individualistic sense of style. Lastly, the universe is becoming more digital and it will invade our wardrobes soon. Think app for changing garment colour, temperature modulating garments, etc are not far post Google glasses and LED infused garments."
