The term ‘perm’ conjures up images of big ’80s and ’90s style voluminous ringlets or a never-ending cascade of curls. But this year, celebrities are giving their own take to the classic hairstyle. Sarah Jessica Parker may have motivated thousands of women to embrace their curls with her iconic do in Sex And The City but now many straight-locked lasses are turning to the technique to add some wave and movement to their hair. Emma Stone was one of the first to go the textured route when she got her locks permed, documenting the entire process on Instagram. The result was a more relaxed, natural-looking style. Jaime King, too, got a mane makeover and showed off her beachy waves at a recent fashion show. Olivia Munn, last month decided to add some texture to her locks, sharing on her social media account, “My hair is so thick and heavy so I have a hard time getting body into it. So I’m putting in my first permanent wave.” At this year’s Oscars, it was Jennifer Lawrence who flaunted a faux perm and Blake Lively has rocked curls a month ago too. So is the style here to stay?

RETRO REVIVAL

The perm is definitely coming back says Vibhoar, Director, NEU Salonz.  “A number of celebrities including Kim Kardashian West have rocked the style, and they didn’t have to chemically perm their hair to achieve the look. There is always a way to embrace the trend,” he says adding, “The loose curls typically last for three months and tight ones can last up to six months. Since this is a chemical service, the result depends on your hair texture as it can make your hair dry. Before going in for this, keep in mind the structure of your face. Any stylist should give you the right advice and the right direction, whether to go for a spiral perm, plain perm or body perm.”

This style is seen this year in a more relaxed way, with natural looking curls, or curls only at the ends, mentions Loic Chapoix, L’Oreal Professionnel Dream Team member and      Artistic Hair Director, Dessange. “We are far from the ’80s look, we now prefer waves and texture. Natural looking curls should last three months, and it can be perfect for the summer to have a wavy do without making much effort. Post the process, don’t use a comb but just use your fingers to scrunch and style your curls,” he adds.

TREAT WITH CARE

Perming is not suitable for all hair types. Those with thin or over processed or chemically treated hair should not opt for this, explains Arpit Jain, Founder and MD, Auraine Botanicals. “Always use shampoo and conditioner with extra hydration to provide the hair the added moisture that it requires. This helps in controlling frizz and saves plenty of time as maintaining dry curls is one tedious task.  Every 15-20 days, go for a hair spa to lock in the moisture, maintain strength and elasticity. To define the curls, leave-in products must be used. Also, avoid any sort of highlights, dyes or use of other chemical treatments for at least the next month,” he says.

CUSTOMISE THE LOOK

The perm trend earlier was all about the volume. If you’re looking  to change the existing texture of your hair, try this technique to give you a fuller look. Anisha Fernandes Tavares, Senior stylist and make-up artist from Nalini of Nalini & Yasmin salon says, “There are different sizes of curling rods and different techniques depending on the result needed. Any kind of hair processing is essentially hair damage. So the only way to reverse the damage and nurse your hair back is by deep conditioning it.”
