From Sarah Jessica Parker to Lea Michele, Jessica Biel, and Lily Aldridge amongst many others, the ombré hair colour has become a norm for the season. With dark roots and locks gradually getting lighter, with ends having the lightest colour, the trend that started last summer may seem daunting to most.  However, it need not be. Depending on your skin tone and your age or personality, you can get a look that’s very subtle or one that screams out for attention. Rather than creating a harsh line that you get with dip-dye locks, one can go more natural with up to three shades lighter than the base colour.

A YOUTHFUL LOOK
Carole Robequin, Senior Manager Training and Head- Creative Team, Jean-Claude Biguine Salon & Spa, India says an ombré hairstyle will make you look young and has the additional advantage of making facial angles soft. “Ombré hair is a gradual colour shift from dark to light usually leaving the roots dark with a graduation of lightening, (or another colour); fading from a darker colour near the roots to a lighter one at the ends.

It is generally attained by means of a balayage system and is perfect for individuals searching for a low-maintenance hairstyle. It essentially reduces the hairstyle budget while keeping the costly lighter colour style,” she says. A person can choose one to three colours to shade for the ombré effect. In the warmer months, go for lighter, more vibrant shades and in the winter months, choose cooler, more ash tones.

For a dark skin tone, deep reds, coppers, and cool ash make for beautiful choices. For a caramel skin tone, rich browns, coppers, possibly even violets (depending on one’s career choice). For a fair skin tone, ash tones, subdued blondes, golden caramel tones will add warmth to the skin.

TREAT THE TIPS WITH CARE

Hairstylist Perry Patel says this look is similar to a grown out hair dye. “You have to put a lot of deep conditioner on your ends as they are the most porous and dry. Additionally, one should use a good colour shampoo, conditioner and serum as well as do weekly hair spas to maintain the colour. Protecting the ombré coloured strands from the sun so to avoid damage is important,” he adds. This look is better suited for young to middle aged women.

BETTER WITH FASHION SHADES

Sapna Bhavnani, hair expert says there are a variety of shades one can choose from. “You can go from dark to light red or eggplant to lavender. Each look requires a different amount of maintenance. The ombré effect is a beautiful one and works best with fashion shades,” she says.
