Films: The perfect excuse for a holiday

Our favourite theme of the month is 'films' and why not, after all it's 100 years of Indian cinema. And while we hold that thought, After Hrs does a round up of eight of the most popular film festivals held outside of India that you could make a vacation out of. And no, Cannes is not on the list…

Raindance Film Festival, London

Pegged to be one of the largest independent film festivals in the world, the Raindance festival is not too far away. It’s scheduled to take place between September 25 to October 13, 2013, at West End, London. Since submissions for the Raindance festival are still open (till June 1,2013), the list won’t be out till September 1. But you could always take care of your visa details, tickets and hotel bookings before that. A non fuddy-duddy film festival, Raindance was established in 1992 by Elliot Grove to take the regular functioning of Raindance Film School to the next level. Some of the graduates of the film school include Guy Ritchie, Emily Loyd, Ben Miller, Christopher Nolan, Nick Hornby and Sacha Baron Cohen, among others. Expect to see some crazy creativity while you’re there, but then again, it’s London after all!

Toronto International Film Festival, Canada

Since its inception in 1976, the Toronto Film Festival, which used to be called the “Festival of Festivals” then, has been one of the most prestigious film events to be held in Canada. The festival gives many filmmakers from across the world the opportunity to show their works to those who perhaps wouldn’t even get to see these films. This festival is also non-competitive and does not give out awards except for the one full-length feature film that’s voted for by the viewers attending the festival.

Sundance Film Festival, Utah

Held in Park City, Utah, United States, the Sundance Film Festival dates back to 1978. It was headed by Sterling Van Wagenen, John Earle, and Cirina Hampton Catania, with of course Robert Redford as the chairperson. This film festival is known to have given many filmmakers their big break and that list includes Quentin Tarantino. You too can be a visitor at the film festival but given the rush, book your tickets or season pass in advance to make sure you don’t miss out on anything. Now the festival is so well organised, you could even book your room through their website. Bookings for the 2014 Sundance Festival open up around August this year. So stay in the loop.

Venice International Film Festival, Venice

The oldest film festival is coming right up in August. While being part of this magnificent festival can turn out to be quite expensive, it’s probably a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Films are screened in venues in Palazzo del Cinema and Palazzo del Casinò. Tickets and passes to the Venice Film Festival range from €12 to €500. The festival promotes international cinema across genres, and apart from new creations also hosts retrospectives and tributes for those major figures who have made a difference to cinema over the years. While they’re yet to announce their list of films, due around July, you can always make your plans right away.

Rotterdam International Film Festival, Netherlands

Founded in 1972, the 43rd International Film Festival at Rotterdam is slated to take place from January 22 to February 2, 2014. And this means you have plenty of time to plan your visit. And while the festival is often compared to Cannes and Berlin, among others, the IFFR doesn’t quite believe in the red carpet event. Here filmmakers are actually encouraged to mingle with audiences and the festival has a fierce fan following. It’s one of our favourite picks when it comes to checking out films from countries including Malaysia, Brazil, Denmark, Serbia and Iran.

The 64th Berlin International Film Festival will be held from February 6 to 16, 2014 and movie buffs have a special treat waiting for them. Robert Wiene’s The Cabinet OF Dr Caligari, which was first shown in 1920, will be screened 94 years later in a digitally restored version.
