Veere Di Wedding may have elicited collective kudos from the audience and critics but we couldn’t help but analyse Kareena Kapoor Khan and Sonam K Ahuja’s last few spate of palate-cleansing appearances. When Kareena showed up in a Dhruv Kapoor pantsuit at the film’s first press con, it sent a tingling frisson of intrigue across the audience. Flashing her enviable abs, she proved yet again that no one pulls off the unapologetic glamazon like she does. A pair of peep-toe red heels, a gold brooch on the lapel and her signature smokey eyes were all she needed to wreak a multi-sensory assault. In the last few weeks, she’s oscillated between an Abraham & Thakore chintz print crop top to a polka dotted Tommy Hilfiger halter dress to a sheer-yet-structured Mugler blazer.

If Bebo has radiated a sexy and of-the-moment vibe, Sonam has embraced princess chic with an unflustered aplomb. Prairie-like, effusively ruffled and tiered maxi dresses with exaggerated sleeves, aristocracy-inspired lady-like Erdem dresses and concept saris have been her go-to picks. Well, one doesn’t expect anything less from Mrs Ahuja as she’s time and again shocked and thrilled style arbiters with her surprising and very desirable clothes, which have set a template for other actresses and their stylists to reference and emulate. Putting a fresh-faced spin on the timeless allure of ladylike elegance, Sonam and her stylist sis Rhea Kapoor have come up with a legion of anti-fit maxis, which prove that ‘covered-up’ is as striking as barely-there.

“The Erdem dress with sheer slits was subtly sexy and offered a playful hint of peekaboo,” says designer Surily G. If Kareena has favoured a bold and decidedly-sexy style, Sonam’s nodded in favour of a cumulative aesthetic, which is steeped in decade-old-decadence and offers an unironic view of pretty. We get a style jury to dissect and analyse their very distinctive yet statement-making styles.

Fit vs Anti-fit

Kudos to Sonam’s sister, stylist and producer Rhea, who’s clearly enjoyed playing dress up with her red carpet muses — Sonam and Kareena. Stylist Eshaa Amiin observes that Rhea has lent both the actresses individual personalities. “On one hand, Kareena is pulling off bold looks with midriff showing and crop tops with great gusto, while on the other, Sonam has gravitated towards the anti-fit trend by embracing pieces with exaggerated sleeves and volume. Kareena is in great shape and carrying it off effortlessly even though Sonam has taken relaxed dressing to a new level,” says Eshaa.

Designer Falguni Peacock could still easily picture Kareena as the timeless Poo of Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. “Poo was such a strong character and you could never erase it from your head. Look at her abs now. She’s worked hard on her body and it’s the right time to flaunt it.

Sonam, on the other hand, is a treat to any couturier and she can look like a million bucks in almost anything. She has a great height and a beautiful face, which she works to her advantage. She’s doing the unexpected in terms of dressing which I feel is amazing,” says Falguni.

Power dressing vs old world charm

If Kareena comes across as someone decidedly more tailored and alarming confident of herself, Sonam channels her inner old-world princess from a fairy-tale. Designer Monisha Jaising observes that both Sonam and Kareena complement each other with their individual and multi-layered sartorial takes. “Their stylists are lending a lot of thought into each look and I am liking each and every look,” says Monisha.

Surily seconds that. “Kareena is looking her best ever and the first pantsuit which she wore was a fab pick and that ensemble was very well styled. I think the crop top and the hint of midriff added spunk to the look. At the end of the day, it’s about rooting for girl power and what I find incredible is the fact that one could feel the love and synergy between the actresses and at no point, did they come across as competitive. If Bebo radiates a sexy, edgy vibe, Sonam exudes the sunny optimism of a happily married bride who celebrates vintage nostalgia and is confident about exemplifying the age-old idea of femininity. Also, she’s put the spotlight on the romantic decades like the swinging ’60s and the scorching ’80s,” adds Surily.
