Varun Vazir speaks to Falguni about the secret of their success and what it takes to make it in the business.
India's famous fashion designer duo Falguni Peacock and husband Shane Peacock have achieved great success in the industry, from famous stars from Bollywood and Hollywood strutting their unique dresses. Jennifer Lopez, Katy Perry, Rihanna are just some of the big names the pair have worked with.
To be successful, "you need to be really good to sustain yourself", to the point where "no one can touch you", she says. Falguni reveals the turning point in their career was their decision to showcase their work at international fashion weeks, which changed everything for them.
Falguni says that Jennifer Lopez is one of her favourite stars she loves to dress. "She (Lopez) wants to try everything different and if she likes something, then she will want to wear the same thing in different colours." Adding, "It's so exciting to try and make that same design look different."
In 2014, Falguni and Shane received the prestigious Bharat Samman Award (given to a select group of people by the NRI institute for outstanding achievements in the chosen field). "It was a big honour and it felt good that people are noticing and they see that we are representing India on an international platform," said Falguni.
While fashion keeps repeating and reinventing itself, Falguini advises that the key is giving a vintage piece from the 40s or 70s a modern twist, so it still looks current. "If you wear it right now in 2015, it should not look like you removed it from your mother's cupboard from the 1970s," said Falguni.
Her advise for designers out there, is to not be disheartened if you don't succeed the first time. Instead, commit to being dedicated to your craft and never give up.
