For some, they maybe frumpy dumpy but looks like the fashion set has warmed up to the ’90s utilitarian accessory — the fanny packs. Barbara Bui in its Spring 2017 outing presented them in a shiny patent format and models slung them around the hips, Prada in its SS 18 menswear show sent out oversized fanny packs worn at the back. From Gucci to Moschino and designer Masaba Gupta in India — the fanny packs have emerged to be the coolest accessories over the last few seasons. Tie them around your waist like a belt over an anti-fit silhouette or throw them across the shoulder like a sling — there are many ways to wear them.

Luxury is about comfort

Designer Masaba Gupta, who has toyed with fanny packs, prefers smaller and more compact versions. “I don’t like the multiple pockets. Today, luxury is more about comfort. Karl Lagerfeld did the ankle fanny packs for Chanel, which were very cool,” she says. Gupta suggests that one can also wear them as a baajuband over an oversized shirt. “I wear one when I go for my runs. The cross body pouch is also a cool idea,” says she.

Radiates a cool vibe

Fanny packs bring to mind TV shows and movies of the ’80s and the ’90s. Sarah Jessica Parker’s Carrie Bradshaw wore a Gucci fanny pack circa 2001 flashing her taut abs in Sex And The City series. Designer Falguni Peacock of label Falguni and Shane Peacock says, “It’s utilitarian and functional. Just throw it around the shoulder and exude an unmistakable cool vibe. Make it sexy by cinching it on a jumpsuit or a dress.”

Perfect for travel

Designer Monisha Jaising still has her Gucci fanny pack from the ’80s which had wooden toggles detailing. She shares, “I love them. They are  very functional when one is on the go and also more secure as one can put one’s passport, currency exchange in it. They are also popular with the Europe backpackers. And, you can carry them to office with your coffee and muffin on your way to work.”

Too frumpy

Stylist Rick Roy opines that only very slender and skinny individuals should gravitate towards fanny packs as they add that extra bulk to your waist. “It may make you look frumpy but work wise, it’s convenient,” says he.

Comfy chic

Stylist Isha Bhansali admits that all the stylists carry it all the time. “When you’re in a relaxed mood, they work, especially, for people on the go. Even for holidays they provide the much-needed comfort. In a way, they also edit your look and make you filter out stuff and carry things which you really need,” says she. Isha suggests that men should go for tone on tone and opt for leather fanny packs and avoid rexine. “We don’t want to see the bulge popping out of your pocket — either back or front,” she adds.
