At the recently-concluded Paris, Milan, London and New York Fashion Weeks, designers brought back a flickering fury of luminous hues. Designer Miuccia Prada, who always ends up being the bellwether of the season, sent out a statement-making shimmery tasselled number in neon green. Balmain’s ’80s-inspired body-con dresses jolted the fashion set with electrifying fluorescent stripes. Balenciaga, too, presented a couple of turtlenecks in lambent hues. Looks like neon tones aren’t just confined to accessories and footwear, but Fall Winter 18 strongly nods in favour of sporting head-to-toe gleaming colours. However, these overpowering ensembles aren’t for the faint-hearted.

Designer Rimzim Dadu, who experiments with a lot of metallics in her collections, isn’t a fan of the neon trend. “I don’t see myself adapting to neons. I may use them as an accent or highlights, but fluorescent tones are not my style,” she says.

MORE AS A MAKE-UP ACCENT

Neons have always been the beauty mainstay but this season, one sees them assuming alarming proportions and looks like it’s not a faux pas to sport them from head to toe. Designer Arpita Mehta sees it catching up more in terms of make-up like bright lips or eyes. “It’s a bold trend and I don’t see it taking off here. However, it may work as make-up accents,” she states.

BALANCE IT WITH NEUTRAL HUES

One can easily picture these statement hues making for surreal imagery in brand campaigns and magazine photo spreads. According to stylist Aastha Sharma, they are ideal for fashion editorials. She suggests, “As it’s a compelling hue, you need to keep the rest of the look minimal. Go neutral with everything else and have a pop of colour - maybe as a separate or an accessory.” She sees this trend assuming its own variations in the coming months.
