For those who suffer from greasy skin, applying facial oil or oil-based cosmetics may seem like a bad idea. In fact, most look for shine-free or mattifying products instead. However, all oils may not be bad and some like tea tree and rosemary oil can help control excessive facial oil and even reduce acne. The right facial oil is one that's easily absorbed by the skin and doesn't leave an oily residue. Very often when one over-cleanses the skin, it produces more oil to compensate for the moisture lost and hence using a good face oil can restore the balance, leaving it clearer.

USE MILD MOISTURISERS
Dr Swati Srivastava, leading dermatologist, Sketch Clinics says those with oily skin need to avoid substances that can have a greasing effect on the skin. "It is advisable to use mild water-based moisturisers instead. While thick and concentrated essential oils can have negative effects, not all oils need to be avoided. Application of oils can also balance the sebum production of the skin and keep the skin healthy. Recommended are oils which are lighter, or diluted and used in moderate quantities. The best way is to mix a few drops in your mild moisturiser or drop a few drops of oil in your bathing water and bathe with it. Mild oils like tea tree oil that's known to help with acne and lavender oil can be used," she says, adding, "There is a theory that applying oil regularly on the skin will stop your body's own oil glands from over producing oil, but we are not sure how far this holds true."

OPT FOR OIL-FREE PRODUCTS
Dr Apratim Goel, cosmetic dermatologist and laser surgeon, Cutis Skin Studio, feels oily skin people should avoid oil application especially on the face, as oils can cause simulation and blockage of oil glands leading to comedones and breakouts. "One can instead opt for an oil-free product. Mostly these are very light oils and contain silicon. Even serums and oils like argan oils can be applied on oily skin. However, if any oil stimulation of breakouts occurs, it should be discontinued. Oils are excellent for make-up removal. One can use any oil based make-up remover, just ensure that oils are not left on the skin."

PRODUCTS SHOULDN'T CLOG PORES
It is true that acne prone or oily skin type people must avoid oil application as well as oil-based skin preparations like sunscreen and moisturisers says Dr Ashwini Padmawar, dermatologist and cosmetologist, Dermacare skin clinic. "While selecting products make sure that they are non comedogenic as oil products clog the skin opening which leads to blackheads and whiteheads and eventually acne. It is advisable to use a face wash which has exfoliating and oil controlling agents like salicylic acid or glycolic acid and to use light gel-based products," says she.
Dr Shefali Trasi-Nerurkar, MD Dermatology, Trasi's Clinic and La Piel adds that excess oils used over face can aggravate acne. "It's best to avoid oils anywhere on the face. Moisturisers can be used, only if one experiences some dryness."
