Confession — there are quite a few times when I have fallen in love with a piece of cutlery or a décor item at a restaurant and wished I could take it home. Fortunately, that will not be a problem at the soon-to-be-launched Plum Cafe by Bent Chair. Because everything I see here, right from the cool cutlery to the funky furniture to the quirky wall art, everything is up for sale!

Now that I have recovered from this happy discovery, I lean back against our plush chair to take in the ambiance. The sun is streaming through the windows on one side of the restaurant, bathing it in a happy glow. There is a whole lot to take in, with the colourful horse statues on the walls, to the funky crockery and the planters hanging from the ceiling. Frankly, it’s all a little overwhelming. But once I get going with the food, I realise it’s all good.

I kick off our culinary journey with the Truffle White Fungus Clear Soup (Rs 430). It’s delicious from the word go, with the earthy flavour of the truffle infused mushroom broth making it the perfect start to a meal. Both the baos — the Wild Mushroom (Rs 485) and the Spicy Barbequed Chicken (Rs 555) — are sufficiently good, but I tilt more in favour of the former with the bird’s eye chilli and the burnt garlic adding to the taste. But what really gets the conversation going are the Edamame and Truffle Wontons (Rs 425) and the Prawn Sesame Toast (Rs 425). The former is a melt-in-the-mouth, truffle infused, cream cheese and edamame affair that’s hard to put down. The latter has a spicy plum dipping that brings out the flavour of the prawns generously dowsed with sesame.

Another dish that strikes as unique is the Sweet Potato Dimsum (Rs 375), where the sweetness of the roasted potato is balanced with the creaminess of the cream cheese. Chef Sagar reveals that they will be sending out these dimsums as palate cleansers to the tables. The Water Chestnut Corn (Rs 395) with its crispy corn fritters gives a spicy kick with its scallion and pepper. So, to end on a sweet note, I order the Plum Tropical Fruit Citrus Cheesecake (Rs 550), a pretty looking dish with fresh, sweet fruits and a creamy scoop of cheesecake. Extremely refreshing, we recommend you do not leave before trying this.
