What happens when Alyque Padamsee decides to revive his one of the most famous plays? The shows go housefull, of course. But full house is not challenging enough for Padamsee. And that's why he decided to show two different interpretations performed by two parallel casts of Jesus Christ Superstar. This is the first time ever that such a feat is accomplished, anywhere in the world!

"Doing two separate productions has been the greatest challenge of my life," says Padamsee but blames his talented cast for making him take up this uphill task. "The musical talent in Mumbai is so incredible that during auditions, I found two singers who could play Jesus, another two who could play Judas and even two Marys. In Production "X", Jesus is sung by 32-year-old Nicholas Brown while in production "Y", 22-year-old Khurshed Mogrelia is Jesus. By using the audience space through the giant ramp in the shape of a Cross, I am using a technique known as Immersive Theatre where the audience becomes an interactive part of the show," explains Padamsee.

Though he is all praise for Shiamak Davar and his choreographers, he thinks Newman D'silva is a talent to look out for. While Mogrelia considers this play as "an experience that will remind one once again how important is God," Brown is more vocal about his excitement. "It was my favourite musical as a teenager and I even sung the song Gethsemane for my final music exams in high school," he says.

Padamsee says that he revived Jesus Christ Superstar after 40 years because of the situation in the world today. "Where hatred has reared its ugly head to try and vanquish harmony and love, this is the right time to perform it," he adds.

When and Where: Today and tomorrow at St Andrew's Auditorium at 3.30 and 7.30pm
