From Marie Antoinette’s pouf to Brigitte Bardot’s bedhead — French girls have always been the epitome of effortless chic. But what really defines ‘French girl style’? Is it the messy chignon and a cloud of Guerlain? Comfy flat brogues, a wide-brimmed fedora and a lot of layering? Model and singer Lou Doillon’s rock chick accessories and undone hair come to mind. Or actress Clémence Poésy’s flirtation with mannish pieces including oversized sweaters and boxy jackets. Designer Monisha Jaising, who paid a tribute to the timeless Brigitte in her sailing bride line shares, “There are two aspects to it — the city girl chic, which is the Paris style, for example, Catherine Deneuve and the Riviera girl, which is essentially Brigitte Bardot. The city style is about black and white or navy with cream with a hint of red. Picture a blazer or a suit paired with a pencil skirt. She likes to wear a sexy silk blouse or a camisole inside and offsets it with a tailored suit. The French women also love the bow accent and even cinch their blazer with a bow belt or play with it in the form of pumps or other accessories. When the city girl goes to the Riviera on a holiday, her style changes to prints, bling along with big hair. She also opts for a lot of whites to show off her tan.”

A careless knowing-ness

Anaita Shroff Adajania, Fashion Director, Vogue India says, “There’s a careless knowing-ness to it. It’s charming thanks to the I-don’t-give-a-damn attitude. It’s always timeless yet on-point. For example, a messy top knot, matt red lipstick, a Breton striped sweater, a printed neck scarf, slouchy trousers layered with a lightweight trench coat.”

The delicate balance

Sujata Assomull, Fashion Editor, Khaleej Times says, “I think it is a delicate balance between being elegant and effortless. Also, it’s a consistent style, which is not driven by trends.”
