Living in Mumbai, most of us are familiar with shawarmas and falafel. But when it comes to the Middle East, there are a variety of ingredients, spices and dishes to discover that make the Levantine cuisine so exciting. It was for this, that we paid a visit to Arabesque Pop Up Menu at JW Cafe, JW Marriott Mumbai Sahar, that's being held to introduce us to the many delicacies of this wonderful cuisine. Think Kibbeh Bil Thum (traditional lamb meat balls filled with burghul and pine nuts served with garlic yoghurt sauce), Halloumi Makli (fried Halloumi cheese with traditional pickle), Rubiyan Majboos (grilled tiger prawns with majboos rice) and much more. And to take us through this culinary journey, we had the very affable Chef Nicola Kadmos, Chef De Cuisine, JW Marriott Marquis Dubai with us.

Starting with the Lentil Soup, where the croutons added a nice texture, we moved on to the Halloumi Makli, Fried Halloumi Cheese with traditional pickle and Shish Taouk, grilled chicken chunks. “Food is a highlight for us as what you see here, you don't get in the rest of the world,” said Chef Nicola. We found ourselves nodding our heads in agreement, as we chomped on the Kibbeh bil Thum, lamb meat balls filled with burghul and pine nuts. The vermicelli rice was another revelation and we happily devoured it with the vegetable stew.

The chef reveals that while breakfast focuses on dairy products, rice and bread are popular during lunch time. The Mezze section was huge, with a variety of cooked as well as raw dishes. It was only when we reached the dessert section that we realised we should have gone a little easy on the mains. Whether it was the flaky and crispy Baklava with its nutty filling or the sweet dumpling-like Luqaimat, the desserts were a revelation. The Shaabiyat Bil Jibn, flaky little phyllo parcels of baked fresh cottage cheese were our own little pieces of heaven. “In Arabic food, people generally want five or six items on their table. Our culture demands that the table is full of food and if possible, get more food!” laughs the Chef. If the food tastes so good, who are we to disagree with the thought?

The Arabesque Pop Up Menu is on till August 31 only for dinner at JW Cafe, JW Marriott Mumbai Sahar.
