January is the time when you’re back from your New Year vacay. If back-to-back hectic nights of partying mean sequins, shine-on pieces then post-partying week entails revisiting your closet and opting for fabrics, styles and silhouettes which are rather forgiving and timeless. Also, it’s the time when you try and follow your New Year resolutions and assess your life — yoga versus cross-fit fitness regime, curls vs poker-straight hair, glitter versus matt nail paint. As far as the sartorial picks are concerned, earthy linen, cotton and khadi should be your go-to picks. Slouchy, roomy and anti-fit are the three style gems you should try inculcating in your everyday clothing.

Designer Rina Singh of label Eka suggests investing into a more meaningful and season-less style. “Go with easy shapes that let you breathe and don’t make you feel guilty of holiday weight. Effortless is the new buzzword for fashion for the new seasons. Don’t force anything for the sake of a trend on yourself. Edit such pieces out of the wardrobe and focus more on a few well-made and ‘timeless’ shapes,” she says

MASTER THE ART OF LAYERING

Layering is essential, go for pieces that you can wear day to night and can be worn to dress up or down with easy layers. “Big sleeves and out of body shapes are almost essentials for the new season, as they add to the casual chic quotient,” adds Rina.

REWORK THE CLASSICS

A closet detox could be anything as simple as a change in style ideation. Initially, people were hesitant to work with certain colour palettes and materials, now that’s slowly changing — 2018 is going to see a lot of neutrals and extra texture. Designer Varun Bahl suggests, “For those who have a hard time letting go, an effort can be made to rework the existing classics into a different look altogether. Hold onto sculptural designs, garments that enhance your body features. Moreover, investing in timeless numbers is good as it can be put to use at all times and won’t fall under the category of clutter. It won’t be long before we see the cold shoulder being replaced with a lot of obliques and experimental/statement sleeves. Have a good understanding of yourself and the changing trends will help you sort your closet wisely.”

DETOX DOESN’T MEAN FRUMPY!

Reintroduce yourself to a window of opportunities and start with a new air of optimism. Designer Aniket Satam says, “The best way to start 2018 is a bright dosage of colours after an intense fall palette of jewel tones. Wear a lot of crisp whites in easy-to-breathe cotton, lightweight jersey. Detox is not always about relaxed and frumpy handloom. One can also reboot one’s wardrobe by indulging in some vibrant colours and playful prints.”
