Despite the platform and publicity that a fashion week offers, designer Maheka Mirpuri prefers to have her own annual standalone shows. The designer who has established herself over the past 16 years feels by having her own showing, she can decide how to deliver her collection. “This will be a very detailed and elaborate couture show and I’ve planned everything with a theme in mind. The show will open with shayari and a dance performance. You will notice that every week is another fashion week and while it’s great for publicity, I prefer keeping mine more exclusive,” says Maheka, who will be showcasing her festive line tonight.

Talking about the collection she says its very romantic and feminine, with a dreamy quality to it. “You will see the comeback of the sharara, heavy lehengas with chikankari, gold tilla and gota work  as well as some lighter silhouettes for Diwali. Parineeti Chopra who’s a good friend will be the showstoppper. She’s so vivacious and has the perfect personality that goes with my collection,” says the designer. The line will be a burst of colours with burnt orange, fuchsia, red and royal blue. Commenting on the glam value a celebrity showstopper brings, Maheka says they can add to the feel. “I had Sridevi walk for my white collection because of her film Chandni. A showstopper should be in sync with my work and not merely to fill a space,” she explains, adding that she would love to dress Rekha someday as she’s a fan of her timeless sense of style.

Maheka feels designers today tend to get very commercial and she manages to stand apart for her individual style. “Every designer has their own niche and should stick to it. There are new designers entering the field every six months and I feel there’s a market for everybody,” she says. And what does the designer have planned next? “I’m going to be busy the next few months with Diwali and the bridal season. I do plan to venture into jewellery designing soon and extend my label,” she adds.
